About author

Madelyn Carol Dervos joined the Kama Sutra Company in 1972 as general manager and energized the company with a clear vision of how high-quality herbal potions and ancient Indian love-making traditions could meld into a cohesive product line that would delight their customers. But it is her singular vision to bring the Kama Sutra, that classic of ancient Indian literature, to a broader audience that makes possible The Kama Sutra: The Ancient Art of Making Love for the New Millennium.

Unfortunately, the original Victorian-era translation of the Kama Sutra by Sir Richard Burton was nearly impenetrable to the modern-day reader. Madelyn set out to find another translation that remained true to the feeling of Vatsyayana's original work. Her search took her to India.

On her first trip in 1988, she explored several versions of the text and deliberated over many illustrations of the Kama Sutra sexual positions. Nothing fit her dream of bringing a true and modern version of this ancient text to the Kama Sutra Company's discerning customers. However, it was during that visit that inspiration struck. Bumping along in the back seat of a tiny, three-wheeled taxi on the road back to New Delhi, she realized that the only way to get her ideal version was to do it herself.
She then traveled repeatedly to India in search of exceptional art, the kind that would invite her readers to paint themselves into the rich atmosphere, loving embraces and depth of feeling portrayed in the Kama Sutra. "Some visits I would find only one or two paintings so it took quite a few trips for the collection to become complete," she recalls. In fact, it took Madelyn ten long years to gather the 21, hand-painted, original illustrations you will find in The Kama Sutra: The Ancient Art of Making Love for the New Millennium.

Next, she assembled a team of writers, each bringing a unique set of talents to the project. Rob Love, a writer, editor, book designer and professional photographer shared Madelyn's commitment to produce a vivid and enticing edition true to Vatsyayana's work. Evelyn Vuko, a syndicated columnist, author and former English teacher with a special interest in Victorian writing, brought Burton's 1883 translation into the modern vernacular. Their collaboration resulted in an inviting and accessible version of the Kama Sutra that retains the raw flavor, mystique and unabashed eroticism of the original manuscript. And Madelyn is thrilled. "It's enjoyable to read and easy to understand. We re-wrote it and designed it and it is the most beautiful Kama Sutra book available today ! "

Do you long to be a better lover? To find fulfillment in love? Look no further than The Kama Sutra: The Ancient Art of Making Love for the New Millennium. Based on that classic work of ancient Indian literature, this modernized version preserves the essence of Vatsyayana, the author and religious scholar, with clear language and vivid illustrations.

It explores Kama, the process of using the mind and soul in the enjoyment of the five senses. The main ingredient of Kama is the contact between the sense organ and its object. In Vatsyayana's day, love-making was a natural science to be studied diligently and how you got there was as important as your destination. The Kama Sutra: The Ancient Art of Making Love for the New Millennium provides your continuing sensual education.

This Japanese silk bound 176-page edition includes 21 graphic hand-painted illustrations of the original Kama Sutra love-making positions complete with step-by-step directions. With erotic names like Turning, Churning and Splitting the Bamboo each position, like all new skills, demands dedication, concentration, and practice to perfect. Some like "Suspended Congress" require that the woman have limber and acrobatic talent. The Kama Sutra: The Ancient Art of Making Love for the New Millennium is designed to help you become the lover you long to be.

"All the places that can be kissed are also the places that can be bitten." Each of the 34 chapters begins with a quote from Burton's translation. These excerpts serve as a window on Vatsyayana who is still perceptive, innovative, and often humorous over 15 centuries later. Here you will learn how to build an environment made for love. He describes the ideal location for a home as well as room design, furniture arrangement and placement of books and trinkets to please a loved one--even the correct number of pillows to create an enticing bed! Ancient secrets are revealed for keeping your body desirable with lotions, perfumes and potions. And which foods and herbs, like red onions and fennel, will conquer a heart and sustain desire. In our modern age when crass pornography is commonplace, The Kama Sutra: The Ancient Art of Making Love for the New Millennium reminds us that love-making is part hormonal rush, part longing, and part acquired skill—a skill you can easily learn.

I still can't get over the quality and beauty of this book. It's great to add to any collection, and would make for the perfect wedding/bachelorette gift! I gave this as a gift to my cousin since she just got married... she loved it! She put it on her coffee table as a conversational piece, and lets just say it started many conversations!

You know, I really dislike some of the original Kama Sutra, but I would like to own this just to have something close to the original.

Excellent review! I have avoided (and did try to read) Burton's translation of the Kama Sutra due to the "impenetrability" you talk about. A new translation is just what I want to read!

It appears to be beautifully presented as well.

I will need to save up for this.
