BDSM and consent in porn

Contributor: Kkay Kkay
I usually keep my interest in BDSM over on the written side of the fence, but I've been watching videos more recently, and I'm disturbed by how many of them are labeled as BDSM but show clearly nonconsensual acts.

I get that porn is an idealization of sex; that it's supposed to be about the fantasy, not all the trappings, but I'm talking videos that start with a person being chloroformed or kidnapped and then brutally raped being presented as BDSM (and not marked as nonconsensual). It's not just a few videos, either- I'd say about a third of the ones I've seen fall under this.

Is this normal for the genre? Am I looking in the wrong places, or are consent issues always going to crop up?

I think you're looking in the wrong places. Those seem like rape fetish videos, which are not uncommon. A lot of the BDSM stuff is mostly underground, so you're just going to have to sift through it like the rest of us do with regular porn---it's always going to be hit or miss or completely opposite of what we expected.

Indeed. BDSM, I believe, is one of the most misunderstood genres in society, and perhaps doubly so in porn. Those ravishment scenarios are tied with BDSM, but it's certainly not the whole. Generally I'm not a fan of BDSM porn. For me, it's also an expression of love, of closeness, and not just a way of exploring our more aggressive tendencies, and our lust for the pain-pleasure. When you pay two (or more) people to do this, it just feels fake. But I'm digressing; back on topic. No, consent issues aren't always going to crop up, but I think you'll have to look long and hard to find good BDSM porn.
