I have not used a spreader bar but I think they look pretty cool! They can cost a lot too. I found a great resource that tells you step by step instructions on how to make your own!

Yes, I know of this. There's also another method to doing it. They're very easy to make, honestly.

J and I have made a lot of stuff ourselves, you just need to take a good look at it and go for it. I bet the people at Home Depot wonder what the hell we have going on in our home

A finished dowel along with two screw eye bolts makes a great spreader bar. Not gorgeous, but way easy.

I haven't made it, but I had the same thought.

Same as Miss Kay said. Finish it with something, though, maybe paint and a gloss coat to make it nice, or the method that I'm attempting now is electric tape wrapped around it. I like this one though - I've tried to find metal rods in Home Depot and have not been able to, however.

M's got two homemade spreader bars and the materials cost us a grand total of $4.

Two wooden dowels and eye screws. Works like a charm.

Oh look! Apparently others agree!

I gotta start reading responses before responding myself. =D

Ok, since I found this post and I recently made us a new spreader bar, I will mention it here. I used a thick wooden dowel inserted into a pool noodle (you know, the floaty tubes that people use in pools), then cut to the length I wanted and screwed in eye screws to the ends. Total cost for two (one long for ankles and one shorter for wrists) $2.80 And they work fabulously and are padded by the noodle part. So much fun to make and use. Total time to make-about 20 minutes.

I'll never forget the first time an old friend/Dom of mine had me in a spreader bar. The experience was so erotic. Unfortunately, hubby isn't in to bdsm much whereas I am. It's always a good idea to make your own if you can. I can't believe how much some places charge for them.

Over a year ago I tried to make the spreader bar described in OP's post, but found that the anchors would not hold inside the bar even under lighter tension. Instead I ended up using some steel tubing, with a threaded metal rod down the middle, some washers, coupling nuts and eye bolts to finish the whole thing off. It's fairly heavy and very industrial and I love it.

You can buy a roll velcro at AC Moore that you could use in some DIY bandage projects. That stuff is VERY strong.

My bf followed this tute to make two of these. They turned out great, have held up very well, and were very inexpensive
