When I was in college, the hospitality (meaning culinary basically) program had a restaurant that was completely run by students. When I was kitchen manager for the week, I added ice cream to the menu as my dessert, but our ice cream machine was broken. I ended up getting a huuuuge bowl, layering ice and rock salt in it, then putting the smaller bowl with the ice cream batter in it INSIDE the bigger bowl of ice-salt and whipping it by hand. It was a huge pain in the ass, but it ended up the smoothest ice cream I've ever tasted. I was so proud of myself!!!
