Brainstorming Club Activities

Contributor: Splendwhore Splendwhore
I was brainstorming in regards to the Eden Lives Healthy club, and I had a few suggestions for activities, if you were open to listening? Feel free to let me know if I'm out of line.

So I was thinking that maybe it could be fun to hold competitions, so to speak. I have three different possibilities in mind at the moment that I'd like to run by you all: weight loss, exercise, and nutrition. There would be a specific thread for each particular competition. It could either occur monthly, or perhaps just once or twice a year. The idea behind this is that each of us would be competing with the other for the title of "Most lbs lost", "Most exercise minutes tracked", and "Most nutritious Meals Eaten". A calorie counter's thread would also be neat, for those of us who do so. There could certainly be a title for "Most days within calorie limit".

The winners each month (or competition period) could perhaps receive a small prize (such as a $10-$25 EF GC). This isn't strictly necessary, but it would be an awesome incentive for each of us to improve our health and daily lives in little ways! The best part is, even if you don't happen to win the title of "most xxx", you're still a winner for making those positive changes! Are you really going to grumble when you look back on the weight you've lost, the exercise you've completed, or the healthy food you've consumed? I sure as heck wouldn't! Those are all definitely still cause for celebration! And if you don't win one particular competition, there's always next time!

What do you think? Could this be done? See any promise in this idea?

Sounds great but how can we make sure that everyone is being truthful with their reports? After the last health club meeting hosted by BBWTalksToys I was drinking a lot of water, eating more spinach and even walked a few days but I fell of the wagon. I know that I will only be cheating myself if I were to cheat and lie about my progress but you got to admit no one wants to look the one who is doing the least. Plus we all love gift cards

Honestly, I can't think of any true way we could confirm that someone is being truthful about their report. It's pretty much an 'on your honor' sort of thing. Like you said, to lie you would only be cheating yourself. And if you did win through those lies, I'm sure the guilt would eat at you. If someone were really upset about being unable to keep to their goals, or not doing as much as someone else, I can see one of two possibilities. #1) Do more! Instead of getting discouraged by how well others are doing, use that to motivate yourself. Say, "If they can do it, so can I". Or give yourself personal challenges to try to outdo someone. #2) Just don't check in. If you're really discouraged by your success in comparison to others, stop following the thread. If you fall off the wagon severely and either can't or won't jump back on, then jump off and catch the ride the next time a competition comes around. These are the only solutions I can come up with.

The club is here to support and encourage each other, not to make us feel bad about our choices. Instead of looking at how well someone else is doing, take a good look at your own accomplishments, because they are there, even if they might not be as grand as someone else's. Maybe we could work on a buddy program for those of us who want someone to check in with and find added support? I'd be happy to volunteer to be a pal to one or two people? I'm always available via yahoo IM, Twitter, or Gmail. ^_^

I like the idea of most minutes tracked or most nutritious meal. My one concern with a weight loss contest would be running the risk of someone taking extreme, unhealthy measures to win. But the fitness and nutrition are part of a healthy lifestyle. The weight loss (for those who are actually seeking to lose weight, not everyone in the club is) would just be icing on the cake.

Thanks for your input! Join us at our next meeting and we can talk about it more!

I like the idea of something like recipe for the tastiest healthy meal or most steps taken. Pedometers are cheap and easy and everyone is supposed to walk about 5 miles a day according to govt. recommendations for daily activity. When I worked for a university we tracked steps walked/miles run and would plot how far that would take us on a map (ie to The Great Wall of China or if we have enough people, the moon!)

Maybe instead of it being a contest it could be more like everyone who walks X number of steps in a given time frame can buy a t-shirt for a discount or get $5 off a toy.

BBW- When is the next club meeting and how does that work exactly? I'm still relatively new here and figuring that stuff out.

I understand not everyone in the club is looking to lose weight, but I know that some are. It was just a suggestion, since those are the top three things that come to mind when I think about what it means to live healthy (Healthy weight, nutritious food, and regular exercise).

Thanks for hearing me out! Perhaps we'll discuss it in further details at the next meeting then.

Great idea. I feel like putting an emphasis on the health section would benefit, especially if more people start discussing since it will be good for them as well as others. Sharing ideas is always great, but sharing ideas about healthy foods, fitness, etc is even greater. Hopefully others postings can help motivate others.
