That's it for the macrophotography tutorial. If any of you have any questions about macrophotography that haven't been asked already, now is the time to ask.

Seeing as how I'm pressed for time tonight, I'll get another trivia question ready while you formulate any questions you might have.

I'll ask post the question in a few minutes.

Ok she hung up. She was giving me the same spiel about me not taking my meds and how exercise is going to make me 100 percent better blah blah. Listening to her talk about it gives me anxiety. Hahahah

Back to macro, tripods, etc etc. You have my full attention.

There are benefits to having an extremely reticent, reluctant-to-advise family (like mine)... but then they've got their drawbacks too. Do our bests with what we're given, I suppose.

I'll make this one a really easy one. So, the first person to answer this question correctly will win a $25 gift card from EdenFantasys.

What happens to your depth of field at the same f-stop as you get increasingly close to your subject?

I am, as my children tell me, tecnologically challenged. My wife and are will be travelling in Israel for 3 months and we want to purchase an inexpensive, easy digital camera. I looked at a Nikon Coolpix 4100 for $135. Any suggestions or comments? Remember--neither of us are camera people--unless the disposables count.

I honestly don't know that much about the point-and-shoot cameras, but the quality of the lower-priced models are about the same. Find the one with the features you need, and it will suit you fine. In general, Coolpixes are good cameras. Olympus models are also highly regarded, but honestly, most are about the same.

Congrats, Starkiller87! Indeed the depth of field gets smaller at the same f-stop as you get closer and closer to your subject.

Sorry it took so long to post. I needed to look over my son's homework.

I think that's what I got for my sister when she graduated high school, and it lasted almost 2 years of her abusing the hell out of it before it died, and if I'm remembering correctly its death was something that could have been prevented, so if you were reasonably careful with it you'd be fine.

OK, time for critiquing!

The rules are simple. Everyone who wants to participate should now post one of their photos to be critiqued. Then, by replying to a specific image, everyone should post at least one positive about the image and at least one negative.

If you have any questions about any of this, now is the time to ask.

I was being lazy and didn't want to scan my other macros in. This was already in my photobucket.

Because I didn't have a lot of time to prep for this, I'll just snatch a photo I took for yesterday's 'lesser known kitchen implement ' series

I like it a lot! The bright area at the top right is a bit distracting, and I wish there was some light reflecting off the dog tags. The composition is great, though, with the lines drawing my eyes from top to bottom.

I honestly can't think of anything that could have been done differently for this photo.

Oh that blasted food mill! I could have never guessed it. hahaa

I like that it looks interesting and makes you wonder what it is. (Go figure) It looks spacey or futuristic. And I love how the lines point, I just wish it was sharper. And maybe showed the curve of the bottom.

I like the grouping of three, and their arrangement is good.

I think if I were to change something, I'd take it at a different time of day so the light was coming a bit from the front as well. The rock makes a great background, though, and it's well-lit right now.

It is a really nice photo, the fact that it isnt the whole flower. And the way it is off to the side yet still centered. I personally am not a fan of softer photos but that isn't really a negative critique. I think I am just weird in general.

The light in this is perfect... the tiny bit of green visible in the background contrasts with the (pistils? or stamen? the part with pollen, whichever it was called) really well.

I wish it had been possible to keep the whole stamen-pistil ring of the flower in focus, it seems like you lose a few of the (female organs?) in the back. I'm not sure if improvement would be possible, though, given the hardware limitations.

I'd like to see the nut of this device moved to the upper left corner. That would allow the wire to stretch out towards the bottom right corner and really bring the photo together. I like the exposure and angle used in the photo, though. Both really help the photo/.
