i have always been able to look around the site for a few days and put things in my cart that i think i might want to end up buying but for the last 2 weeks or so every time i put something in my cart and then log out when i log back in my cart is empty.

It might be a browser / cookie issue. I'm still able to add things to my cart, logout, and log back in without losing them... unless they go out of stock. Those items will disappear.
