Either way really. Currently the guy I'm with is very large so we rub the lubricant on both his penis and in and around my anus. He really likes using vaseline and I know some people say it's not good for you but we don't have any problems with it. And actually it seems to work alot better than a few others I've tried.

I'll talk from an anal sex perspective as well since it's pretty much the only times we use lube. We use a ton of lube for anal, so lube goes on both the ass and penis/toy that's going to be inserted. We don't have any small warm up toys, so we also use fingers at first for warm up, which also get a thick coating of lube. I've heard before that a good rule of thumb is to use however much lube you think you're going to need and then squirt on a little more for good measure.

I have a special way of applying lube. We use KY or other water based lubes that have no added chemicles for sensation or smells. I squirt a good amount into my mouth and then go down on her. the lube mixed with my saliva makes for a great playground prep. We like lube and allways have. We have 27 years of experiance together and like it when its like a "slip n slide". Also use a lot of coconut oil or almond oil and apply it as needed and then a little bit more.

It depends on what we are doing.
If we're having PIV, we rarely use lube. I needed it for a while a few years back, but I'm on HRT for premature peri-menopause, and my natural lubrication is back. (YAY!) I will use it for a vaginal toy during masturbation,(He gets me wetter than I can get myself) or if we're having a marathon and I've "cooled off" a little and need to put the toy in so we can then have anal sex. Or, if I've already come a few times, and he just wants to see the toy in there. It turns him on. I have no complaints in that department.
For anal sex, I always apply the lube to him, then to me, with the dildo or vibrator in place vaginally first. It's a bit of a mess, but I don't like rug burn in my butt, so we always go with more lube rather than less. When I am having anal sex with someone, I put it on both their tush, my penis, and my fingers (if I'm fingering them beforehand). With vaginal, it depends. Sometimes, I'll lube up both, but most times it's just me that needs lubrication.

Its important to stay lubricated during anal sex so we use quite a bit on the penis and ass. When we do use lubrication during regular vagina intercourse, i just apply a bit on my penis and that is all.

Depends on the situation. We only do anal with toys, so that's what I'll address.
For most toys lube on the toy + lube on the butt works just fine. For bigger/longer toys or extended play I like a little more, so I'll either work some inside with a finger or squirt some inside with a syringe/"shooter".

It it's for vaginal sex, only on the vagina. If it's anal, on both the toy or penis and ass.

Secondly, though thick, Vaseline really isn't a very good lubricant, especially for thrusting. For large, slow moving buttplugs it might be fine, but there are much better lubes. You might want to look around at thick water-based lubes to try (such as Maximus, the various "anal" formulas, and Probe). Many common lubes are thin to mimic vaginal lubrication, whereas for anal use you want something that sticks around.
