I am a woman and I:

-need to poop a few hours before so I'm not worrying about that
-need to have recently cleaned my booty in some manner. nothing too intense, just a baby wipe is fine or having recently showered
-need to warm up fairly extensively with plugs because I have a small butt
-clitoral orgasms are helpful sometimes, but I actually find being very aroused sometimes helps me get more into anal
-sometimes my bowels are just not feeling it and try as I might I'm just not comfortable and I have to stop

It complicated or feels that way for me. My rectum is not always as up for it as I am sometimes. I usually shower and clean as I normally do. If my body is up for it I use an anal plug to prepare. My man isnt patient so sometimes he wants me to rush it but I must obviously take my time depending on the size of the plug. We procede by making love and then when I feel I am ready I take out the plug and put a condom on my man....the hardest thing to do in the world as it is unerotic for him and turns him off. So I have to do it quickly before he loses his erection. Somtimes after I remove my plug I am no longer willing to have anal, especially if I have had an orgasm before I remove my plug.

Oh, you two use condoms, I can see whereas this is certainly responsible, it could make for longer preparation. My Man and I are fluid bonded and we don't bother with a condom. My Man is in his 50s and usually will lose his erection as soon as we try to put a condom on him.

I HATE rushing, too. My Man is pretty patient. Everybody is different in what they need to do. I relax enough to not have to use a butt plug, (but sometimes I do during oral, just for fun!) but most of the time I have to have just had an orgasm it's the thing that relaxes me more than anything. Also, once you get used to anal sex, your outer anal sphincter will actually start to relax and open on it's own from most forms of arousal, at least in most people. Some people do take longer to get to this relaxed arousal phase, though.

I am a female and I always shower before hand, definitely have to have a BM beforehand, wine helps, as well as butt plugs. Also if he licks my asshole that gets me really horny and relaxes everything. But it doesn't always work and sometimes he ends up cleaning off his dick so we can just fuck.

I'm not always ready for it either. For me, I usually need to stretch prior to having anal sex. It is actually hard for me to stretch my ass if I do not have lube, so I recommend that!

I definitely agree with the eating healthy part. If my digestion is healthy and happy, and my body well taken care of, I am much more up for anal sex. It's such an intimate act, I find, on such a base level. There is no hiding from it or denying what it feels like. On several different levels, one being good health and diet.

There is such a deep level of trust involved that I find I have to be very comfortable with my partner and with my body to enjoy it. A willingness & luxury in going slow and savoring the process is very beneficial.

I agree with most of these answers- as for others too- for ymself i need to feel physically ready. We generally plan for anal sex, but if not - i will surpise him sometimes, but i generally use the same routine. I like to have had a bowel movement, i use a enema bulb and give myself a few little cleanings just to make sure.I like to have a shower, shave, and be clean. If i feel fomfortable though- i will just use some wipes to freshen up.

Then i will generally use a plug or a comfortable insertable flexible toy like the Silicon Beads. if not, we will work up from small-to-larger toys as we go, till i am stratched enough for anal sex.

Most of the time I just wait for a BM, wait a while, then put on a disposable glove and feel around a little to make sure the 'zone' is clear. If I'm planning on being particularly adventurous I get the disposable enema bottles from the supermarket, replace the contents with lukewarm water, and use that to rinse a couple times, then wait an hour or two (as suggested in The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women, by Tristan Taormino, great book!).

Eating lots of high fiber fruit can be very helpful in making sure the pipes are as clean as they can be, especially apples and grapes!

You might want to avoid foods with small, hard seeds when you're eating. Small, hard bits can be very irritating if there are any hanging around.

A water wash-out will help with that if you have eaten berries or other stuff that fits in that category.
