Growing up in an extremely religious family, anything sexual was absolutely out of bounds for me until quite a late age. Until I left for college, I had only tried masturbating a few times, and never with much success (I actually believed for a time that I was "broken"- partially for even trying and partially because I never reached orgasm). There are definitely environments that make people less likely to masturbate, which is sad because I think that everyone can learn something from masturbation. That said, there are other ways to learn these things and masturbation is just not everyone's thing. I know people who don't masturbate and are really healthy sexually.
