I don't do it because I'm not Catholic, and I wouldn't want to go to New Orleans either. If I wanted to be around a bunch of sweaty and drunk people, I'll go to the local frat houses. At least the boys are all easy on the eyes.
I talked to native of New Orleans and he said it's an absolute waste of time. He said all the good parties happen during Halloween
I don't celebrate it myself, though I would like to visit and watch the parade from a hotel balcony (when I win the lottery so I can afford it). Just the experience would be enough for me, don't care for participation.
My ex-husband went on leave with his unit for it one time. One of the guys lived there, so he was the native guide ... and he really did come from a hougan family (ex said the guy even had a shrine to Chango in his footlocker).
Don't celebrate it, but have gone to New Orleans once...to see what it was like. Decided I don't like a million drunk people flinging cigarettes around.

I live in NO and agree with this 100%. Halloween is my birthday and part of the reason we go out that night but the parties are WAY better. Mardi Gras everyone is drunk in the worst, most annoying way. It is literally like the whole city becomes a frat house.
I did not leave my house this weekend. You cannot get anywhere with the traffic. I don't have work Monday or Tuesday. My husband does have work Monday. Unless he gets off early it will take him 2+ hours to get home from parade traffic. UGH. Hate this holiday.
Well being that I'm from Louisiana, yes of course I celebrate Mardi Gras. We go to all the parades we can around the home and that are kid friendly. It's actually been years since I've been to New Orleans for it though. We were planning on going this year, but our plans changed. But we still have been to a few parades this year.
