When watching something in another language do you prefer subtitles or dubs?

Always, always, always subs. Most of the time dubs are terrible.
Although, I like subtitles even if it's in English. I have a tough time understanding people speaking, but visible text is just fine.

Sub, sub, sub. Dubs are so rarely well done.

I like dubs on my anime when available. In films with people in them I prefer subtitles. I haven't found one that has been dubbed well yet.

Dubs. That way I can knit as I watch without missing anything.

It depends. Honestly, a lot of times I watch everything in English with English subtitles because it's hard for me to pay attention sometimes without having something to read. I do prefer SOME things subtitled, but not all!

I have to have subtitles/closed captions anyway, being mostly deaf does that and you catch so much more with text. =D

Prefer subtitles but hate when it doesn't match what the person actually says.

I prefer subtitles, though I hate when they move to fast and/or are hard to read, which happens often.

If it is a language that I have some familiarity with (Spanish or German) I prefer to have subtitles so I can ignore them if I want and try to get the gist of the conversation from just listening. If it is one I am not familiar with then it depends on how serious the movie is. What really bugs me is when shows put subtitles in for people that are speaking English, simply because its apparent that it is not their first language, like on Iron Chef America with Morimoto. Then of course there are all the purposely incorrect subtitles on things like this link, which can be amusing at times.

Usually subtitles, but it depends on the quality of the dub. Some anime I loved in dubbed form because that is how I was first introduced to it and I fell in love with some of the voice actors. I eventually became a bit of a snob though and started defaulting to subtitles when I would get a DVD that had both versions.

Subtitles! The voice actors for a dub are rarely good enough to make it worth it.
