This is what happens when you ride your bike in the bike lane

A friend of mine shared this on Facebook and I couldn't resist sharing it with all of you as well. So a cyclist in New York got a ticket and a fine for riding outside of the bike lane. It doesn't tell us where he actually was riding, but when he tried to explain to the police officer who wrote him the ticket that sometimes it's not very safe to ride in the bike lane, the cop didn't listen and wrote the ticket anyway. So he made this video to demonstrate just how unsafe the bike lanes can actually be, at least in New York City. I know I've seen bike lanes that look just like that in downtown Chicago with things that block them.

His idea is to ticket the people blocking the bike lanes, rather than ticket the bikers for avoiding obstacles. What do you guys think?

That was great. Not the fact that he got a ticket, but the video. I know with where I live, the bike lanes are very dirty and most likely you will get a flat tire riding in them. I loved all of the crashes!

That was one brave or pain-loving guy to keep crashing his bike into all the different obstacles that were in the bike lane. I especially loved the one where he ran into the back of a delivery truck and flipped himself through the open door and into the truck. I completely agree with poor guy's sentiments, though. If the bike lane is blocked, what else are you supposed to do, but leave the bike lane to avoid the blockage.

That's brilliant. For anyone who thinks he's exaggerating, he's really not. You'd be amazed what people do in NYC bike lanes. I've seen street vendors set up shop, mother's park baby carriages, people walking their dogs, it's ridiculous.

I agree with all of the above. And really, what bored ass cop has the nards to fine a BICYCLIST rather than any actual crime-doer in NEW YORK CITY! I mean, there are some bicyclists that I see that cause injury to pedestrians in college towns, like the one I was in, but that's only because there are far more bicyclists and peds than car-drivers.

V. funny video and it seems wrong that the bike guy got a ticket. City should be paying him for keeping his carbon footprint down.

Brilliant video! Before the end of the video, I started thinking... they should ticket the people who are BLOCKING the bike lane, then bikers can be in it. A few minutes later, that's what he said. LOL So I'm in total agreement with that. It's ridiculous. If you want them to stay in the bike lane, you'd better make sure there is a bike lane to be in. So stupid! (And how you can get a ticket for doing something that isn't illegal is beyond me. Seriously cop? Why didn't you ticket the people who were parked ILLEGALLY all around you? It makes absolutely no sense at all.)

That guy is my hero! So cool that you actually know him. I do think the bike lanes in NYC are getting better.

Watching that makes me glad I don't live in a city...but his idea is good.
The people riding bikes shouldn't get in trouble for others obstructing the bike lane.
Although the bit at the end where a cop is blocking the bike lane seems amusingly ironic.
