Twitter questions for those of you using it

What exactly does the # sign mean in front of a word. Is it a tag, or another way to do the @user ?

Also, how do you retweet?

I realize these sound a bit silly - I tried to look it up in help, but I couldn't find anything.

I think, to retweet, you just put an RT in front of the message. A # sign is a hashtag. I don't quite get those. Something about ranking hashes by their tags or some stupid thing. I think they're ridiculous on twitter.

I don't use the website to do my tweeting, though. I use either Digsby - which notifies me of my mail, facebook and myspace, lets me chat in yahoo or G-talk, and shows and sends my twitter stuff all in one messenger like application - or TweetDeck, which is like a desktop messenger app for Twitter (though you need to install Adobe Air to use it).

That way, Twitter is on my desktop all day and I don't have to mess around with an extra open window in my browser.

Er... I meant to say that TweetDeck lets you reply, retweet, direct message and a bunch of other stuff just by hovering on the user pic next to the message.

link

It also can be either one column with all your friends or you can expand it to show @ messages and direct messages and whatnot, too.

Ok. Done babbling now. Coffee IS working.

Using the hashmark is kind of like "Tagging" the message. It says your tweet is about this and is helps with searches but I don't know about the specifics. The @ simply says your message is to that user.

As far as retweeting, it's not an official thing. When someone posts RT - it simply means they are reposting something they like (as far as I know). There really shouldn't be protocol for something so silly IMO.

I use Twitterfox plugin for Firefox any it is pretty nice, too.

Twitterfox is a good one that I use for my personal Twitter. But I get too many tweets on my Epiphora account, so for that, I use Twhirl. It's also Adobe Air and a desktop client. It pops up each tweet in the right-hand corner of your monitor, and you can do everything that Twitter.com allows you to do, and more (for instance, you can shorten URLs and seamlessly post to TwitPic).

I downloaded both tweetdeck & twhirl this afternoon. I have tweetdeck up right now, & twhirl looks cool - I like the shortened url part!
I was curious about the retweet cause I tried to do it, & did it wrong .

That makes sense, I think, about the # - I hadn't thought about searching on tags.

How'd you do it wrong? It's kind of just a made up concept so I doubt you can actually do it wrong. LOL

A little rant, the shortened URLs are not a favourite of mine. I'm not sure they help PR.

Lol - I was trying to enter a contest that said to retweet the message, & I put an RT @ the username, but apparently it was either supposed to be @threadless, or @threadless wasn't supposed to be there either. I'm still not sure about that.

I have been on it a very short time, & being brain-dead, I think

Oh. For contest type things, you generally copy and paste - not reply to whoever posted it. (=

Well, it's hard for me to convince myself to waste all my 160 characters on a link. The only time I don't shorten the link is when I link straight to my blog.

Other programs/apps out there can show feeds to people interested in specific subjects, noted by people in their Tweets. For instance, I could have one that found #vibrator, and any public updates with #vibrator in it would show up on my feed. I don't use tags that much except for humor, but I see their usefulness for some people.

Yea. Twitterfox does it automatically and it won't kill me but the whole URL shortening thing in general is something I just never understood.

There are ways to get around the shortened links. Firefox has a LongURL add on for it.

Well, it lets you know where you're going but I don't think it matters with PR.
