Dad. He always says he doesn't want anything, even for Birthdays, but that just doesn't fly in our house.

For my father there are no much things to choose among. I always present a Cologne. Thats make me feel guilty.

I have a hard time shopping for my grandmas. I want to get them something they'll like but I'm afraid I might offend them. All my presents scream boring old cat lady.

My sister... the one right before me, since there are five of us. She never has any suggestions for what she wants, but her gifts must fulfill certain criteria:

1) They must be personal and not generic. No tools, no pre-packaged sets (like bath sets, make-up kits, decor), no things that are just tangentially related to her interests (like she loves books, but reads mostly semi-obscure YA, especially fantasy. Buying her a classic and assuming she'll like it because it's a book is guaranteed to go wrong).

2) They must not be expensive. Our dad raised us to be frugal and thrifty, but accidentally instilled a holy horror of pricey gifts in all of us. So most electronics and housewares are out, unless you can show that you bought it for half price or less.

3) Nothing too impractical. Slightly impractical is all right, but it must have a definite use - like a fluffy blanket that was not too expensive and was her favorite color went over great, and a hand-carved bone statuette of her favorite animal was refused.

She has no real preferences in art, buys individual songs off iTunes unless one of her few favorite artists has a new CD (rarely), doesn't want DVD's since she's got Netflix, isn't much of a gamer and buys herself the few games she wants, doesn't use cosmetics, and already has mountains of dice, role-playing books, and LARP accessories. This year I made her a calendar with pictures of her cats and her favorite animals on it. I hope she likes it.

I agree. My brother and step-father are the hardest.

My SO is supremely fussy. And I suppose it's great that he has standards or "knows what he wants," but it can make things frustrating for me. Especially because he always says "whatever you get me is fine and I'll like it," but when the time comes, he always has a critique!
