They can be used that way, but the way we use them is not degrading. I actually use mine because quite honestly, I'm too loud and also I have a bad habit of biting if I'm getting too into it, and sometimes I leave pretty bad marks. Hubby doesn't mind the marks, but I hate to bruise him up too much
