I really enjoy going to BDSM gatherings, classes, play parties, etc. I consider that very different from swingers clubs and hook ups though, because I attend with my partner and I play only with him.

Yeah I agree with this, these types of groups are more suited towards open relationships and/or swinging. People often mistake open relationships for polyamory...

I have been in the swinger life for about 6 months now and enjoy the friends I have made and am glad I took the chance with the partner I did he ans his wife have taken me in and made me feel like family he is also my Dom and would not have it any other way. They have slowly brought me in to the swinger life knowing my past and that I am a little shy we have a small group of friends we go out as friends to movies,dinner or just a day on the lake. Not just a sex free for all, even thought those can be fun. I like the thought of keeping a few of them around for some one to talk to from time to time.

Swinging doesn't appeal to me, even though I am poly. I prefer the emotional connections than the casual ones.

Now for BDSM... purrrrr. Although I only play with partners or really, really close friends.

I like non-play-oriented bdsm meetup munches where people chat and get to know each other. I prefer my play a bit more intimate, and after getting to know one another.

Don't think I've ever been exposed to anything that could be defined as a "sex group," but I am poly and love meeting new people!
