I don't think it's always a material issue. What you'd want to look for are: Time/Prep, lube, diameter of toy.

For back door fun, you're going to want a thicker lube. Silicone or Water based depends on the toy. I prefer a silicone toy with water based lube or glass with silicone lube. Pay attention to material safety and you'll be ok.

Prep is probably the most important thing, cleaning out and relaxing. No rushing either, you'll only regret it later.

My preference is a toy with a flared/non-insertable bottom. I once lost the cobalt glass plug and was afraid I'd have to explain it to the ER peoples.

If you are having issues with insertion at first, I would suggest investing in a dilator set to work your way to opening the vagina a bit. The dilator set will gradually work you up to opening for bigger toys and prolonged play.

Just a suggestion. Make sure that you use lube that is compatible with the material of the toy you decide to use.

Start out with a slick and slightly thick lube on a tapered toy. The shape of the toy is going to be more important than the lube - I have a dildo that I like anally (Tantus Captain/Squirt), but it's so blunt that I have to either take it very slow or work up to it with another toy. There's nothing wrong with having a toy or toys dedicated to starting the night (or day, or afternoon) off right, and then moving onto other favorites.

For prolonged play I like silicone. It's bodysafe, so provided you choose a lube that you don't react to you won't have any irritation. It can also be cleaned and sterilized. A close second would be hard materials such as metal and glass. Again, they're safe for long-term use, and they also tend to be slick so you don't have to worry about "loosing" the lube. They're stiff, so they can potentially be uncomfortable if they poke, one of the reasons I like silicone just a little better.

Really soft materials can sometimes be difficult to insert, but again, the shape is the most important factor. That and taking enough time to relax around the toy.

Does inserting lube prior to play help with maintaining lubrication? eg. astroglide anal shooters...

Sometimes yes, especially with longer play sessions. There are two factors conspiring against you: the anus tends to "squeegee" off the lubricant from the toy as it slides in and out, and the rectal mucosa tries to absorb water from the lubricant, which dries it out. The end result is that it can get a little dry around the internal sphincter sometimes, and making sure you get lube inside does help.

Lube shooters do this, or you can use a simple syringe, or finger play while stuffing the lube in. A lube that contains ingredients that help hold water (such as glycerin) also can help somewhat.
