Do you have an idea of what length or girth you'd like? That could help us narrow down the suggestions on specific toys.

As for material, I'd recommend silicone. It comes in varying levels of rigidity, but it's usually got some give to it. It's also completely body-safe, so it won't give you any nasty reactions if you're sensitive to chemicals.

For safe and flexible/soft/squishy, I would definitely go with silicone. Do you have any idea of the size you want? I'd recommend anything by Tantus or Vixen Creations, especially the Tantus O2 or Supersoft, or Vixen Vixskin.

Ditto - Vixskin is our favorite and it comes in many sizes to suit beginners all the up to 'queen' size. O2 is also good - but it's a bit firmer - still soft, just a different feel than Vixskin.

Also echoing the VixSkin recommendation.

Stay away from low safety rated materials - jelly, etc.

I LOVE my Bandito by Fun Factory because of how soft it is, but it may be too long/girthy if you're new to penetration.

VixSkin or Tantus are good ones although I'm not a dildo fan myself.

Depending on what you are interested in, I would suggest either Doc Johnson's The Original, Grrl Toyz,Tantus' Vip, or The Ella. All of these dildos are 100% medical grade silicone and can be washed, bleached, or boiled.

From greatest to least, in order of "squish," I would rate Vip, Grrl Toyz, The Original, then the Ella.
From thickest to thinnest in girth, I would rate Vip, The Original, Grrl Toyz, Ella.

Of the four, The Ella and The Original are my favorites. Although The Ella is less flexible, it is the easiest to use and most versatile.. The Original is girthy and textured. These are all affordable mid-level dildos. If you want to invest a little more in a product you KNOW you will love, I highly suggest a VixSkin product, like Maverick or Mustang. Tantus also produces very plush silicone and I highly suggest ALL of their products.

Hope this can move you in the right direction.

I heard that the original Vip you linked to is pretty firm. The Super Soft version, on the other hand...
