I really wanted to do this for a description review, but alas, someone got to it first Are there any other art history nerds in the place that get the joke that Jimmyjane is making? This is one of those things I'm filing away in the back of my brain as a special treat-to-self thing. No way I'll have 100+ dollars for a vibrator any time soon but it's so worth it. One day!

I'm definitely not an art history nerd, but I remember learning the term "Vanitas" in conjunction with "memento mori" in my humanities class. That would explain the skulls... and...the butterflies??! Could you explain the joke to all of us non-art buffs? =3

Yes, please - let us in on the joke The only thing that comes to mind is they are referencing the "little death"?

Quite interesting. I did not know about vanitas until you mentioned it and from what I learned, there are many ways that the term can be applied to this vibrator.

And yes, la petite mort could be somewhat linked to this, Sammi, but it's not the main symbol. I'm not spoiling the fun.

I also believe they are referencing "the little death"/the fleetingness of the body and its pleasures.

Yes, there are probably dozens of ways one could think of making meaning from this but I actually think Sammi's interpretation is the primary statement that the designers were making. The reference (with the butterflies and the skulls: classic vanitas imagery) is to a style of still life painting that meditated on the inevitability of death and the transience of the body and its pleasures.

I'm big on artistic irony stuff. I have a handbag that has 'sunflowers' written all over it- with black and white fabric. When I saw it in the shop, it kind of inexplicably trapped my mind in a loop! After reading about 'vanitas' in conjunction with 'vibrator' it has had a similar effect, but in a more morbidly meaningful way.

What a wicked, freakin' awesome vibrator! Thanks for letting me in on the secret. It's going on my long term awesomeness wish list also.

lol I just wanted other people to geekily appreciate this with me. I am glad some of you did!

I have always thought of Jimmyjane as another luxury company that made quality but ridiculously expensive stuff. This kind of made me rethink my initial impression of them. Stuff like this shows a really great sense of humor about their products and a whimsy/playfulness that I really respect. Now I think of them as a ridiculously expensive luxury toy company with BRAINS. And I like that

They look wonderful really but $170.00 is so damn much! Still they are a sort of forever toy given the replaceable motor and the 3 year warranty. Maybe it's a good gift idea....hmmmmm I wonder if I could convince Sigel it's worth it.
