Not Quite Blinded by the Black Budding Rose

The Black Rose Budding Blinder is a great blindfold for those who are just getting into bondage and experimenting with sensory play. However, if you're looking for a practical blindfold that blocks out light and stays on during soft or rough play, you should probably pass on this one.

Use

No doubt Doc Johnson put a lot of thought into the beautiful production of this "Leatherette" blinder--however, the practicality just isn't cutting it for me. I found that the best use for this product was more along the lines of tying wrists, or ankles together, instead of blocking out light as a good blindfold would. If you're a beginner who likes the idea of blindfolds, but may be apprehensive to complete blackout, this is for you. Otherwise, if you're looking for a totally practical blindfold, that shuts out light, and stays on tight, this may not be your match.

Design / Craftsmanship / Material / Size / Fit

The craftsmanship of this blindfold is beautiful, the design, not so much, Why do I say this? The materials used and the quality of the stitching are clearly terrific but the design of the nose cutout is lacking-allowing light to seep through underneath.

Let's break this down into two pieces:
1. Materials
2. Design

Okay, number one: Materials.
The Black Rose Budding Blinder is made of two materials: Faux Leather and Silk. The black covering on the front of the blindfold is made out of a thin, smooth, piece of faux leather, and the back is a thin piece of black silk (the same material used on the ties).

The stitching around the blindfold is tight, straight, and there are no loose threads or fraying coming from the sides.

On the top left side of the blindfold, there is a “Budding" Rose (hence the name), made out of the same faux leather material on the front, lifting up about 1" from the base.

The ties are made of a deep purple silk that's been doubled over to provide some thickness when tying. There's some great foam padding on the inside of the blindfold as well. I don't know if it's 100% made of foam, but that's what it feels like when you squish it.

Now let's talk a little bit about the design:

The design is definitely versatile. The ties reach 52" all the way across, turning this blindfold into one that can be used on anyone regardless of how big their head (or ego) is. The black covering itself is also a good size, being 3 1/4" in the widest part and about 7" across. The only trouble is, even with the length and versatility of the ties, the blindfold does not have a large enough cutout for the nose, and when being worn, it props up on your nose and light passes through-- so what used to be a surprise, is now anticipated.

Performance

When you put the blindfold on, at first it appears to be sturdy. You hold it up to your face, tie it behind your head and you're ready to play, right? Wrong. The second you turn your head or move, the tie in the back starts to slide down. Now I understand that silk slides, but if this is the case, shouldn't there be some sort of additional snap or tie that will hold it up? I mean, the blindfold feels amazing once it's on--it’s soft, light, cushy (if that's a word?) and classy, but it just doesn't block out the light and stay on!

Fix those two usability issues and I'll give it a 5 star rating!

For now, you can use it as a silky way to restrain your partner’s wrists, or ankles, or you can softly tease the body with the hanging silk ties.

Care and Maintenance

So the materials are great, and the design is okay, but let’s chat about the usability:
I don't see this toy really needing much cleaning unless you sweat a lot, or it gets a facial. Even so, the faux leather material doesn't absorb liquid easily, so you'll have time to wipe it off. I would recommend that you throw it in a lingerie bag or pillow case when washing, because you wouldn't want the silk to pull. Also, I would wash in warm water on delicate, or by hand if you have the time.

You can store this anywhere--just not next to your pet porcupine, because it will pull or tear the material.

Packaging

Love the packaging on this blinder. Doc Johnson did an amazing job keeping this classy and super sexy at the same time. Take a look at the pictures to get a better idea of what the packaging looks like.

Front: Thick cardboard box with lady wearing the blindfold.

Back: The back contains information about the blinder:

The two sides: one has a suggestive picture of a lady getting pleasure wearing the blindfold and vibrating panties in their BDSM line, and the other side has calligraphy of the blinder's name.

There were no instructions in the package--but if you know how to tie your shoelaces, you should be good to go!
    • Recyclable
Follow-up commentary
I've used the Rose Budding Blinder a couple times since writing this review and every time I've worn it, or my partner has worn it, it has slipped off and exposed too much light. I’m not a fan, in terms of its practicality.

Thanks for the review. I had hoped the adjustable ties would be good for my big head, but since I sleep a mask, I can't have it sliding all over the place as you said it does at the slightest movement.
