Does Smoking Bother You?

I used to smoke, and I never smoked around people who were non smokers because I believe its disrespectful. I don't really like smoke anymore but it all depends on what it is.

As long as my clothing doesn't smell, I'm fine.

I grew up around smokers - smoking sections on airplanes, restaurants and even the work place. When things went no-smoking is was a god-send. When I smell smoke I go in the opposite direction.

Recently I stopped smoking. I miss the ritual of having my cigarrette but I don't miss the smell. I don't want anyone smoking around me because I still want to smoke, but I hate smelling it on clothes or people. Smokers don't realize how they reek of smoke at all times.

I hate the smell, and it makes me cough. Even if it didn't cause lung cancer, I think it's a disgusting habit.

Smoking bothers me. A lot. I hate it, it stinks so bad! But if I'm out in public or at someone else's house I tolerate it (I mean I'm not queen of the world ) but in my car or home no way, no how.

@ Woman China, I think that you are the kind of polite smoker I wish others could emulate.

I will mention one thing I hate that no one has mentioned so far. I hate cigarette butts or partially smoked cigs tossed on the ground! My former neighbors left them all over my yard & I am so allergic, I have to wear gloves to pick them up since they jammed my little push mower - yes, there were that many! They never threw them on their lawn, naturally. I asked so many times they not do it, but I think it got me retaliatory trash.

Now, I want to clearly state, I did not start this discussion as a means to bash smokers! I am truly interested in where people fall within the answers I provided. I welcome all answers, but want it said that while I think it's been civil so far, I didn't want smokers to feel like this was an intentional attempt to encourage bashing. I don't think anyone has done that.

It bothers me. But lately I've noticed that sitting around a fire pit bugs me too if I'm too close or hang around too long. They do a number on my sinuses and give me a headache. If I have a cold and someone smokes around me, it makes it worse. If we aren't outside or there isn't good ventilation, I'd prefer and appreciate people to not do it around me because it affects me like that.

I try to avoid cigarette smoke as much as possible. I'm quite sensitive to it and I hate the way it makes my clothes smell.

I don't mind standing next to someone smoking outside, but not inside the buildings.

I am a smoker and I still have to be in a well-ventilated area or it can give me a headache or worsen an existing headache. I hate smoking in the heat without any good air flow out. I really don't mind it much, but it can seriously hurt my head depending on if I'm already having a migraine that day or if the smoke is in a house where it isn't ventilated. That kills me! I don't like for my own smoke to go right in my face either. It's easier to control that when it's your own though. It's not something I'd go getting upset about though because well, people smoke! They're free to do that & I smoke too. If they're going to smoke, I will NOT say something to them just because I get migraines. If necessary, I'll go outside or keep a distance. Usually anytime smoking is going on it's outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, so I don't get horribly bad migraines from it very often. Either way, I wouldn't make someone else stop their smoking just because I'm the one with the head sensitivity. I can always move my own person away from their smoke, which would mean no hurt feelings & then I could have my comfort without stepping all over someone's toes... and rights.

Anyways, I am always careful not to let my smoke blow right in someone's face too, even though most the people I know wouldn't even mind it since they aren't as sensitive to migraines as I am. Also, I don't smoke a whole lot unless I am extremely stressed or having an endometriosis flare up.

Thank you!!! These are my feelings too! It's YOUR choice and you just hope to be able to freaking enjoy your smoke without someone giving you crap over it. Believe me. I know! It seems like everywhere you go, if someone so much as sees your lighter they flip! Hey, we all do what we do to get by. Ya know? Why all the smoker-hate so suddenly? So I definitely feel you on that.

Only I wasn't as open about it. Lol. Everytime you and I are on the forums I notice you saying things that I've often said to people in my life or thought in my head! Lol. Great minds think so very much alike. It is amazing to see you again, Wetone! It has been a while. I've missed your presence here on the forums you lovely thing you!

Smoking is ok, but I think if I were to upgrade to a nicer place, I would want to have people smoke outside my house. And if I were to have kids someday, I think I would want to give up smoking for them, and have them stay away from people who smoke.

I dont smoke and there are certain people i dont mind smoking around me, but because of my medical problems those people dont get to close and go out of their way to make sure the smoke doesnt blow directly my way, and will put it out if i stop coughing at any point

I have a really sensitive sense of smell and I don't really like when folks smoke around me but I'll tolerate it for certain people like close friends and family.

As a former smoker I can't really complain much but I have noticed how bad cigarettes actually smell.

I have severe respiratory issues, and being around smoke for even a few minutes will cause me to become ill, usually for weeks at a time. So yeah, I have a huge problem with it. Even being in a room where someone has smoked is enough to do it.

Hi Alan & Michele, I was just curious about the skewed statistics you mentioned. I've never heard this before. Do you have a link to more info about it?

Secondhand smoke bothers me alot and I don't want to be anywhere near it. The results of studies on secondhand smoke have shocked me. Healthy lungs for me!

I tolerate it to be polite, but I don't like smoking. There are plenty of designated smoking areas, so there is really no reason for people to be smoking around me.

I've switched to mostly Vaping (using an e-cigarette vaporizer thing) but I occasionally still smoke regular cigarettes.

It has been very confusing for me because people that don't smoke love the smell of the vaporizer (think of caramel/mint) but can't stand the cigarettes, so I have to consciously think about what I'm doing. lol

Smoking bothers my allergies so I prefer not to be around people when they smoke, It also makes my hair and clothes stink. I think it is fairly insensitive when people don't ask if you mind or not.

As an ex smoker, I prefer not to have to breathe it. But since some family members still smoke, I can deal with it in open spaces.
