It's green if they're online, grey if they're offline, and I presume that the ones without it are those who have their online/offline status turned off. I haven't seen that before, but since there was no mention of it in the site updates for today, I'm wondering if I've just been blind for the past couple of months!

I've known it was there pretty much since a month or so after I joined EF because I remember turning mine off right away when I found out how.
It's not terribly surprising that some people didn't know about it though, I mean I hang out in the forums (more like stalk them some days xD ) all the time and only just learned what the little light bulbs meant a few months ago.
