Pop just seems lazy to me. It drives me nuts when people call it that.
Most of the Midwest and a good portion of Canada North of the Midwest would drive you crazy then.

Why is it "lazy?" It's a regional word. Like "Coke" or "INsurance" "Drapes Vs Curtains" pecan, route or anything else that varies from one part of the country to an other.

I'm from Northern California and always called it soda or by the brand name. The prefered drink of choice was always coffee though. Everyone was always saying, "Damn, I need a cup of coffee!"

I'm from colorado, but I lived in pittsburgh for a few years, and I think I picked up 'pop' from there. Sometimes I say 'soda' too? But most of the time I just say the drink name, honestly.

In pittsburgh they say "book bags" instead of "backpacks" and that always drove me nuts.

I'm from Milwaukee, WI and we call it soda. When I moved to the "sticks" of west-central Illinois and heard a 6'3", 230lb friend of mine, who is all redneck and mountain man combined refer to it as sody pop, I nearly spit my soda all over him. And yes, there were banjos playing in the back ground, Ha!!

When I speak english I'll probably say soft drink or soda, with a big preference for soft drink. Because soda makes me think of soda pop, which is the worst name you can give a child (The outsiders traumatized me, thanks).

But in french, in the part of the world where I am, we call soft drinks "Liqueurs", which basically means "liquors"... Which can lead to some misunderstanding sometimes. I remember, as a kid, I once bought a chocolate box that stated "fruit liquor filled chocolates".... No, that did not taste like strawberry or cherry soda. At all. Oh the horror. If I would have expected this, it would have been least worse I think. (And yes, I could buy those as a kid because the liquid was only liquor flavored, there was no alcohol amount)
