So how do you, I've been in one for several years now, and it has been a very rocky road, I was just curious about other people's experiences in this scenario.

Keep communication open and honest. I'm in one with a Englishman who is 4,000 miles away, so not only do we have the distance, we also have cultural barriers at times (example: British men are even more reserved about their emotions than American men). It's mainly continuing to be honest and open and staying in contact, but also respecting the fact they have a life they have to live (work, family, etc). It also helps having goals of so-many-visits or eventually moving closer or whatever, so it doesn't feel like you're aimlessly drifting and wasting money on calls and trips.

Honesty and a willingness to tough it out. If one person decides it's not worth it, it's over.
