Silicone doesn't smell. Neither does glass, or wood. By using the filters on the left hand side of your screen, you can produce a list of not-likely-to-stink dildos, like this:

Then use the 'view actual size' to make sure your choice isn't huge.

The Silk looks nice and non-threatening, but there are plenty of options.

Another nice silicone dildo and is small is the LELO Ella. It's not too big at all and it has a nice g-spot end. I think you would like it!

I, like many people, made the mistake of buying a relatively cheap jelly dildo for my first toy...and naturally was a little disappointed with it. Unfortunately there is no one size fits all dildo that is cheap, well made, and perfect for everyone...but my recommendation is search for silicone (using the material filters on this site)...it's flexible (unlike glass/metal/wood which are fun in their own ways)...it's clean and stink free...and you can get reasonably priced toys using it. Save your money and spend a little more on your toy and you generally will be rewarded. Either way well-kept silicone will last well and won't give off foul odors.

There are some great glass dildos on sale on the site right now and you can get a nice silicone dildo in the $30-$40 range. But TPR and plastic might be good options as well. Most of the time they are low-odor and can be inexpensive.

To be sure, check out a couple reviews on a product to see if anyone comments on a strong odor.

Like the others have said, there are plenty of options for toys that don't stink here on Eden. Another way to use the filters is to scroll down the left side to "Safety Features" and check "phthalates free". Often these chemicals are a big part of why a toy has that stinky smell.

Also, I'd like to point out that not all silicone is flexible - some of it is be quite firm. That's the great thing about this site: there is probably at 99% chance that any dildo you look at purchasing will have a review that indicates whether the toy is soft or firm.
