I've never had/used a realistic toy before and I don't particularly care for them but I was currious if the people that do like them choose them for the look or for how they feel. Are they distinctly different from a more whimsical design?
I like them because they're easy to fantasize with. It's easier to pretend I'm with a man if I'm using something like this as opposed to this.
As far as feel goes, which I like more varies based on the precise shape, material, and my mood. My favorite toy and the one that feels best to me is realistic, but I definitely have days when I prefer whimsical designs, which are sometimes better if you have a very specific kind of stimulation in mind.
I appreciate having a diverse-looking sex toy collection. It's mostly about the feeling for me, though. Realistic dildos tend to be squishy, filling, and have a defined head that's usually great for G-spot stimulation.
We didn't start out as a fan of realistic toys - but if you think about it, the female sexual response system has been designed to respond to the real thing - and we've found over time that realistic toys do work better than your average shaft or stylized toy.
I don't like them, I prefer my toys to look like toy, fun and whimsical. I already have a real one to play with when I want, and I hope it keeps my partner from feeling jealous of my toys if he isn't comparing himself to the giant life like dong in the room.
I agree with Bethy. They look like freaky dismembered bits, which is weird when you don't objectify parts of people strongly. However, I have one, and it's solely for the feel of it. No more. No less.
Both, because I want the next best thing to having the real thing. While they sell ones that ejaculate, I would rather have one that does it on its own so I don't know when it happens.

I like them because of how they feel. They are as close to the real thing as you are going to get in my opinion. I could give a shit less what it looks like.
