Where is my period?!

Contributor: SMichelle SMichelle
Okay. This is more of a vent than anything else, but hey, if anyone out there has thoughts as to where it may be hiding... What may be delaying it... or how to make it start... I'm open to hearing them!

Three months ago, I began planning another trip to see my boyfriend in Scotland. I planned it perfectly, so that it would be during a time when I wouldn't have my period. My birth control pills SHOULD help regulate that, as I've been on them for quite awhile, and I ALWAYS get my period during the placebo pill week.

Now I'm on day 4 of the placebo pills, 11 days before I go to see my boyfriend, and my period is no where to be found! No cramps, no signs of it possibly being about to start...nada...It should be here by now.. it usually is! Grr...And I'm 100% that I'm not pregnant.

It's not the end of the world, I know, but seriously...grrr...

Any thoughts? Tips?

Emotional expectations (especially in relation to anticipated sex) also affect period flow, no matter what artificial hormones are being used. The body is being confused by the conflicting messages is all.

Wait it out is all I can say.

I would contact Planned Parenthood and ask them. They're very qualified to answer questions like these. Plus they also have a wonderful system where you can 'text' them a question and they'll 'text' you an answer back!

That makes sense. I hope that it decides to sort itself out soon.... Absolutely frustrating!!!

If you have been on the certain pill for too long your body could have gotten immune to it. You may need a different strength or brand. Stress plays a factor in it as well. Good luck if it just so happens so show up while you are over there you will just have to take it for what it is worth.

I don't think that's it. It's been less than a year, but over 6 months. Enough time for my body to adjust, but I don't think it's enough to make me "immune" to it.

You might be able to just go ahead and start the next month's pills if your doctor thinks it would be okay for you and if it wouldn't screw up any prescriptions or anything. I did that occasionally when I would have something planned out perfectly and my period did not show up when expected. I can understand what you're going through. Mine is currently at least 2 weeks late and it's just frustrating to wait for it (I know I'm not pregnant and I don't take birth control pills).

Yeah, if it doesn't start soon I'm going to start a new pack just as I usually would. I am just starting to get THAT feeling though...like its coming. Not as strong as usual but it's there. Hopefully that means it'll start tonight or tomorrow.

What type of birth control is it? Certain hormonal birth controls clearly state their product 'will reduce or eliminate' your period. I'm on Loestrin, which definitely does that -- I haven't had a period in 3 years. I checked with three ob-gyns and they all assured me that having a period is not a medical necessity. Additionally, your weight can have an effect since birth control is dosed at the population average. Being at a far end of the average sometimes brings on adverse symptoms that weren't planned.

I'm on a combination birth control pill that's supposed to give me a monthly period. *shrug* Still not come about yet, but I am constantly getting the feeling that it's about to today, ever since around 9am.. hopefully soon.

I used to skip the sugar pills and just skip the period. You could do that just for this month to make sure you aren't on your period when you go visit him.

I understand; MY pills don't get me on my period when it's supposed to. USED to, not anymore. I asked my dr and she said it's "normal". But my period doesn't start until it's SUPPOSED to END! WEIRD!

Stress or possible hormone imbalance. Certain birth controls I took made me bleed constantly for months at a time while others made me skip my periods all together. Your probably just a little stressed about the trip and your body is becoming confused. Try taking a relaxing bath and not think about your trip. The more you relax the better.

Sometimes if you're emotional it can make your period go out of whack. Sometimes if you're sick it'll do that, too. Sometimes your birth control can just make you skip a month--mine did.
