Thickening Water-based Lubes?

Contributor: Envy Envy
So, apparently the new formula of Cumlube over at Bad Dragon (link) is real watery, making it last longer but not so thick and stringy as it once was. So people have been complaining somewhat.

My question is, has anyone ever had water-based lube that was too thin and they found a way to thicken it up? Someone mentioned K-Lube powder, but are there other alternatives that are safe? Perhaps other lubes that are super thick to get a medium consistancy?

I ask because I got my bf a toy from them and it comes with a free bottle, but he loves thick lubes, and I fear this will be the same watery substance others have been getting, which may make him rub himself raw in places.

Too thick for comfort?
Hello ladies, Just wondering what everyone thinks about this being 1 3/4 inches in diameter?? Is that too thick? My boyfriend is about 1 1/2 inches..

Just wondering...

How thick do you like it?

We had an interesting discussion in our Friday Dinner group...about CUM. From watching porn, we all agree, some guys seem to have watery cum, others..

L. Lilly might know...I can't think of anything that would be 100% safe/effective.

I'd suggest just getting a different type of lube (thick vs. thin).

Aw man, that bad dragon lube was awesome! It was super stringy.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mr. Sauce! I'll do my best.

Off of the top of my head, I can't think of anything you could add that would be safe. I mean, if you could get the cellulose they use to make some lubes in the first place, maybe, but I haven't the foggiest idea how it's turned into a lube thickener.

Personally, I'd approach this like a pot of soup that's gotten too watery. It's easier to remove water from a complicated mixture than to add the other ingredients JUST right to keep the proportions. You could pour the lube into a small saucepan, and heat over a very, very low heat. You could also put the lube in a pyrex measuring cup in a water bath over said low heat. The water should begin to slowly evaporate; as long as you keep stirring the lube to keep it from sticking or skinning and don't heat it enough to cause changes to the ingredients, you should be ok. If it starts to bubble or simmer, you've got it too hot. It's going to take a while, but you may be able to drive off enough water to thicken it a bit. It may not be quite the texture you're looking for, though. You never know until you try!

Note - It probably wouldn't be good to try this on a lube that contains some form of sugar. Polymerizing sugars will do very strange things to your lube. (cellulose may change, too)

Also - I've never actually done this to lube, so it's all purely theoretical. Attempt this at your own risk. Take a sniff at the lube once it's cooled; if something doesn't seem right, don't use it! If there's a change of color or smell, the heat may have caused ingredients to break down or react. Also, test the lube on the inside of your thigh or wrist before you use it, to make sure you don't have a reaction to any changes caused by heating.

Also also - Yes, it has occurred to me that you could just open the bottle and leave it sitting to let some water evaporate. If it worked, this would take much longer, allowing more time for contamination by whatever is floating around in the air. Honestly though, you're likely to just form a skin on the surface of the lube exposed to the air.

Interesting. o.O Some guys have said they microwaved the lube with no issues, so I doubt heating it at a simmer will affect it too badly.

At one point I was thinking of adding a bit of Maximus, to get 'maybe' a bit thicker. He loved the thicker consistancy, but I fear this bottle will be too watery.

Awesome! I wondered if using a very warm (not boiling) water bath would work... I definitely think a hot bath would work better than directly pouring the lube into a saucepan. Less chance of the lube scalding.

Your brain makes me so happy, Luscious Lily.

Thanks Goth! It never occurred to me to add another lube to the one you're trying to thicken, but you probably could just mix lubes. It'd change the texture, but who knows how much. After thinking about it from this angle a bit, you could probably get one of the really thick cream lubes (usually intended for anal play) and add some of that to your lube. Again, no clue how the texture would change.

And thanks, Cynthia! You make me blush. Personally, I'd use the water bath method, but I know that a lot of people have never done something like that, so I tried to figure out an easier way.

Why not just get the thick type of lube he likes?

Oh that's the thing, he likes the OLD formula of the Cumlube. The other lube he has was something else that I totally forget.... But it was more watery, not as thick. Just the NEW Cumlube formula is thinner to make it have a longer shelf life, and it's less stringy. But he doesn't care, he just wants it thick, lol.

If we have to get off Cumlube though, I might introduce him to Maximus and see how he likes that. But what other thick water-based lubes are good? They're not for anal play, it's for a sleeve he's getting. But I don't mind if the lube was made with anal in mind, so long as it's thick, but not clumpy or whatever.

If you want to try a new lube, I can definitely recommend both Sliquid Sassy and Ride H2O. Both are thick, water-based, and slick. Ride is significantly thicker and longer lasting that Sassy, but some people find it TOO thick and gel-like. They were both designed for anal, but we use them for toys and ye olde PIV sex all the time.
