Smooth Operator, All The Way

I think I like it better than glass. Either way, a wood toy is very much worth investing in. If not this one, some other specimen of pure genius.

Pros:
Material, weight, feel, look...in short, everything.
Cons:
Nope. It's perfect.

This is the first sex toy I’ve actually wanted to hold in my hand to penetrate someone else with, the first that actually works as a beating implement (though I jokingly threaten that with any number of other items), and one of the very few that’s big enough to satisfy me when I want to feel like I’m being fisted but am all alone (and that self-fisting thing just doesn’t work for me). Basically, I love this beautiful, simple piece of wood.

Wood is as hard as glass or metal, but lighter, which to me means easier to hold on to and maneuver. It maintains a more neutral temperature, which isn’t great for temp. play, but quite nice for those of us who don’t want to spend the time warming up toys to avoid the first cold shock. In fact, the lube temp. was more noticeable than the toy itself. I only use lube if I’m going to jump in with the big end, or for someone else who’s less naturally well-lubed than I.

I was curious about the coating on these wood sculptures, so I did a quick investigation on the Nobessence site. They use a trademarked Lubrosity coating, which makes each piece waterproof and fully bio-compatible (i.e., safe for anything you want to stick it into). It can be wiped with alcohol to clean, bleach solution to sterilize, and probably boiled/dishwashed as well. My preferred sterilization method is boiling, so I’m going to email the company and inquire about this specifically. In addition, all lubes are compatible with this material, though I’d recommend avoiding oil-based ones for vaginal use or if you’re using a condom for safer sex. (Also, any company that has a Marquis de Sade quote on their site gets a thumbs-up from me.)

The smaller end of the Smooth S is ideal for G-spot stimulation; so much so that I was squirting within minutes, and that’s not something I can usually elicit on my own. The larger end feels larger than it looks, to me at least. I have an odd tendency to expect toys made from more ‘exotic’ materials to be larger than they are, so when I initially opened the box (and oh, the box! More on that in a minute) I was somewhat let down by the actual item. However, once in, the larger end is more than enough. I actually prefer to insert and rock a bit or just hold it still, rather than try to thrust with it; that can easily get painful. My goal wasn’t to find something to rival a fist, but I managed to anyway. Yes, the 1 7/8” diameter is significantly smaller than even a small fist, but the combination of that larger width, total lack of give, and gentle curve somehow create a similarly intense sensation. It'd be safe for anal play, though I haven't tried that. The curve is sharp enough to prevent accidental slipping in, not to mention that very thick end.

Packaging matches the class and simplicity of the item itself. The S-shape comes in a gorgeous box (in another life, I’ll be a box designer) that slides open to display the wood toy held in place by two elastic straps. I store it in its box next to my bed when not using, and plan on doing so indefinitely.

More on the company: most of their wood comes from a personally managed sustainable forest in Costa Rica, and what wood they do purchase is done so with responsible suppliers. They do accept custom orders, and offer a registration/extended warranty option in case you drop and damage your wood. Email for information, I couldn't find details on the site.
Experience
As mentioned, this is the toy that prompted me to try hand-held-toy fucking for the first time, believe it or not. Cocks just aren’t fun for me to use unless they’re attached, and my hands work very well…regardless, one night I pulled this out and fucked my partner with both ends of it. The larger end was a bit much for him, but he did his best to take it as long as I wanted to give it like a good boy. There was blood involved in that encounter, which looked fucking beautiful coating the medium wood tone. He later said that the wood kind of blended with my hand and body, looking like a natural extension. I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction.

I also tried hitting him with it, earlier that evening, and it works well for that purpose too. The smaller end makes for a good concentrated impact point. The light weight/hard material mean it’s easy to hold and swing, while still having quite an effect on the recipient.

Sounds WAY too big for me, but I do find wood toys enticing. At the risk of sounding like a loon: I usually don't like scents on my toys, but if this toy had a really nice piney/woodsy smell, I'd be all over it. I loves me some pine.

You have me interested...never used a wood toy. I like the idea that this guy might emulate fisting, which I can't do by myself.
Curious about care...I always avoid putting anything wood in the dishwasher or even using too much water with anything wood. Wood used here sounds exotic but will it stand up vs water, esp hot water?
Good review!. I think I would enjoy the sensual experience of wood!.

Everybody needs a little "wood" now and then, especially if it's a gorgeous carved dildo :) I'll be getting my first glass toy soon, and wood and steel are next on my "must try" list. This dildo really is beautiful...stunningly so. Great review :)

@ Backseat- Ugh. Pine smell makes me nauseous. I know what you mean, though, I like the smell of wood too. This one is scentless, however. :)

@ Saurou- Thanks. :) Not too weird.

@ Liz2- I don't think hot water is a good idea, after reading more (see below).

Re: Care. I got a very detailed email back from the company the same day I sent an inquiry, and this is what they say: boiling can result in damage to the coating, and may force oils out of some exotic woods. Therefore, use 10% bleach solution to sterilize (which is safe for the finish).

They even offered to 're-encapsulate' my toy for free if I had already experimented and damaged the coating!

Your experience portion made me laugh. My sole purpose for using wood, glass, or metal items on my partner is to use them as hitting tools and occasionally a little penetration. Great review, as always.

  • Wooden Toys, what's the allure?
    • Hi there folks!

I was browsing through the dildo section after reading a couple forum posts about people trying to pick between dildos, including some wooden dildos in their choices. I'm kind of wondering what the allure for wooden dildos are?

I can appreciate the artistic value of them, like the "Smooth S Shape", but practical application seems sketchy. I don't care how well made a wooden object is, how well varnished or polished or whatever, it's going to have health and safety issues over time I'd think. Lubricants and body fluids would seep in eventually right? And cleaning, and sterilizing on occasion, would also break down the surface of the toy and lead to splinters and hidey nooks for bacteria I'd think? So why buy them if you want a toy for actual use? If you want a hard, non vibrating toy, why not go for glass or steel?
    • I love wood toys, though I also own glass and metal toys. Here's my reasoning.

      1) They're beautiful! They're silky smooth, curvy, and sensual. That's appealing to me and, often, arousing.

      2) They're lightweight, especially compared to the heft of glass and metal.

      3) They feel more warm and familiar to me, as opposed to the cold sterility of glass and metal.

      4) They're environmentally- and body-friendly. Wooden toys are often sustainably-farmed, chemical-free, and all-natural.

I'd also like to debunk your concerns about splinters and "hidey nooks".

The wooden toys I own are all by NobEssence, so I can't say that I know much about other brands, but I can certainly vouch for NobEssence. Their products are sanded and polished totally smooth and utterly flawless. They use a state-of-the-art sealant that is bio-compatible, hypoallergenic, and completely waterproof, "[stemming] from years of meticulous research and development and meet USP Class IV and VI Medical Standards. According to NobEssence, "when carved wood comes into contact with moisture, it absorbs those fluids and becomes rough, bumpy and even splintery. Most wood sealants considered ‘food safe’ will break down or dissolve over time, so we spent a long time searching for a sealant to make our wood waterproof and body safe."

You should be careful not to damage the surface by dropping it or knocking it against other hard surfaces. You shouldn't boil it or expose it to high temperatures in a dishwasher, but you can wash it with warm water and non-abrasive soap, soak it for ten minutes in a 10% bleach solution, or wipe it down with anti-bacterial/microbi al cleaner, such as alcohol, bleach, peroxide, etc. If you do suspect the toy has been damaged, you can test the integrity of the finish by "immersing it in water for a few seconds and removing to inspect. If the area in question darkens in response to water AND when wiped remains damp when the surrounding area is dry", then you have damage.

In short, if you follow directions and take proper care of your toy, you shouldn't encounter any problems. The philosophy with wood toys is the same as with glass. If you notice that your glass toy has a chip or a crack, you should no longer use it. The same goes for wood toys. Over time, nearly any material or item may have health and safety issues. It's a matter of risk management and taking good care of your toys.

And there you have it! :)

  • Nob Essence - Out of stock leads to discontinued????
    • Hey - I was really sad when the "Dual Use S Shape" (link) went out of stock and then went discontinued. I was saving for it.

But I made my piece and decided to lust after the "Smooth S shape" (link) instead.

But its been out of stock for what feel like forever - is it destined to flip over to discontinued? I really hope not and I have saved enough to buy it and I am just waiting and waiting and waiting and hoping.... :)
    • Oh gosh, I really, really hope not! I was hoping to get this! (Eventually, once I've saved up quite a chunk of change!).
    • For this (and pretty much all stock questions) I'd submit a support ticket. Customer service can get you a much more definitive answer than anybody just browsing the forums can :)

Are you not worried aboutsplinters from wooden toys?
    • Honestly, not really, even tho I freely confess to not owning any wooden toys at this current moment. I'm sure wooden toy owners can phrase it better than I can, but really any wooden toy that comes from a legit manufacturer will have a finish to it that shouldn't wear off, or has been polished to a point that the only way to end up with splinters is to damage it in some way. :)
    • i would for shure use a condom with a woooden toy.. but i dont think i would use a wooden toy they seem boring and way to hard.. but i guess at some point i can try
