Traditional vibrator discontinued

Tina lacks the bass she promises.

The Rock Star Tina is an exquisite looking vibrator with an easy to use control dial that offers multiple speeds. It is quite shapely and attractive while remaining unintimidating. While it will not satisfy those looking for deep vibrations, it is a lovely toy for the price. It would be great as a first vibrator or as a gift to a friend.

Use

The Rock Star Tina by Doc Johnson is a decent traditional vibrator, performing well all around. It is made of smooth silicone and plastic which are very soft to the touch. It can be used anywhere on the body as a massager or as a sensual vibrator, performing well in both fields. The vibrations are pleasant at the lowest setting and are able to produce intense sensations when used to tease nipples to come out and play. While fun, these vibrations tend to be on the buzzy side so they may not interest those who require real deep vibrations to get off. For those who are interested in an insertable toy, there are three slight bulges on the shaft of the toy to produce a subtle, but interesting texture.

The best part of Tina are her abilities as a waterproof toy. This makes for simple, worry-free clean up and exciting play in the shower or tub.

Tina would make an excellent gift for someone you know looking to test the waters and try out sex toys. The aesthetic appeal of the toy and the packaging are to be noted when considering purchasing Tina.

Material / Texture

Tina is made of an attractive mix of silicone and plastic. The length of the body up to the silver band is silicone, although the composition of this silicone is not specified on the packaging. The rest of the toy is made of ABS plastic, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, which is a thermoplastic. The silver band is raised to look like pyramid studs, a glamorous feature of Tina's that adds to her rocker personality. The purple handle is made with "velvet touch", which makes it feel very soft while still being the rigid plastic it is. As a whole, the toy is made without any phthalate materials and is body safe.

The toy has an odor that does not dissipate through washings. It is a smell that is slightly sweet and very plastic-y. This is not characteristic of a true silicone, which should not have any noticeable scent. I decided to compare Tina to the Vamp, which is made of 100% silicone. The Vamp came out of the package with a light scent, although it has gone after a few washings. Tina has gone through the same care but still retains her odor. While it is not extremely offensive as some composite materials may be, it is not ignorable when getting close to the toy.

The shaft of the toy has three bulges that increase in size and make for a lovely sensation when slowly thrust out. There is not much give in the silicone especially at the tip, as that is where the motor is contained. While I expected the bulges to be more pronounced, they are not overwhelming for a beginner like me. There are two seams that run down the shaft of the toy and the handle. They do not line up, curiously enough! These seams are not very noticeable and cannot be felt when inserted.

Design / Shape / Size

Tina is 7.25 inches in total length with an insertable length of 4 inches. The first and smallest out of the three bulges is 3.25 inches in circumference, while the thickest part of the toy measures 4 inches around. Right below the the third bulge, the shaft is somewhat flexible. Upon hearing the word "flexible," the G-Ki immediately comes to mind for me. This, unlike the G-Ki, does not lock into place. It is rather difficult to bend very far, especially against my body.

The texture that the bulges create provide light sensation when thrust and used internally. It produces a subtle effect and is not overwhelming, even for someone like me who does not have much experience with textured toys.

The handle is very easy to grip and is comfortable to hold in the hand. At the end of the handle is a dial which makes for effortless control.

The toy is somewhat discreet for a vibrator, looking more artistic than phallic. The lustrous silver band pops out nicely against the royal purple colour. It could easily pass for a luxury vibrator in terms of appearance.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The Rock Star Tina does not live up to her name, much to my disappointment. Instead of cranking up the bass, it offers buzzy vibrations that did not impress. The easy to use control dial, located at the bottom of the handle, can be turned clockwise for five levels of vibration that are continuous. The first is something in between a 2-3 vrooms in strength, which is nice to start off a session with. The highest setting reaches 4 vrooms, although the buzziness at this level is numbing.

The motor is located in the shaft of the toy. The first two bulges are where the vibrations are the strongest, though they do travel up the entire length of the toy. The shaft can be bent, but doing so while the toy is on causes the vibrations to stop until it is returned to its original shape.

The toy seems noisy while in use, sounding similar to a lawn mower, but it is not something that is likely to be heard through closed doors while playing under the covers. I tested this myself by putting it on my bed and closing the door, and the quietness surprised me!

There is an O-ring in the battery compartment that makes the toy waterproof. This is a very nice feature that gives me peace of mind when washing the toy and exposing it to water. The toy can be fully submerged in water without a problem. In the water, the vibrations travel through well and produce a rippling effect on the surface of the water. For those looking to take this toy in the shower or the tub, this would work well as long as care is taken so that the cap is screwed on tightly!

When inserting the batteries, you may need to adjust the cap a little before you can get the motor running. I've had a bit of difficulty trying to get it to work in the beginning, even when it was screwed on tightly. It takes a bit of toying around to get the toy to work but once it does, you're good to go!

Care and Maintenance

Tina is a major lint and other furry questionables magnet, picking up absolutely every particle it comes into contact with. It should be washed before and after each use with water and antibacterial soap. It can also be quickly wiped down with toy cleaner wipes. While the box claims it is silicone, it does not specify whether it is 100% silicone or a composite, so care must be exercised when looking after this toy. A 10% bleach solution may be used on the silicone shaft, but it must be kept in mind that the entire toy cannot be fully sterilized due to the plastic handle. Due to this fact, the appropriate care must be taken when using the toy between orifices and sharing between unfamiliar partners by using a condom.

Since the shaft is made of silicone, only water based lubes may be used with it due to compatibility issues. It may be wise to store the toy separately from other toys due to the uncertain composition of the silicone. A lint-free toy pouch or an organza gift bag large enough to fit the toy may be all that it takes to prevent a potential disaster such as your toys reacting badly and melting into each other!

Packaging

The box that this comes packaged in is a gorgeous plastic box that is appropriate for gift-giving. It is much reminiscent of Ed Hardy's designs, featuring traditional tattoo designs such as a heart, roses with thorns, and sparrows holding up a sign. While Ed Hardy may seem tasteless to some, this box is too cute to ignore. The packaging is very minimal - the box is easily opened and the plastic mold that holds the toy slides right out. It is slim enough so that you could store the toy inside if you chose to do so.

On the side of the box, it lists some of the key features of the toy in six (6!) different languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian. On the back of the box, it says the toy uses 2 AAA batteries, which are not included, and a little reminder to close the cap tightly to make certain it is waterproof.

All the instructions located on the back of the box.

The bullet points listed on the scroll are all the instructions included with the toy, besides the little diagram I found inside the battery compartment (which was a little bugger to get out.) Very minimal, but there is no difficulty figuring out the toy.

Experience

The moment I received my toy, I was impressed by the overall package. While there was not a lot of information or instructions on how to use the toy, it can be figured out easily with a little tinkering. I turned on the toy and I used it against my clit. I soon discovered that this toy is a huge teaser. The buzzy vibrations did its part to entice me, and very well at that, but it took a lot of effort on my part to get myself over the edge.

While internal vibrations don't do it for me, the smooth bulges on the toy made for an interesting experience for someone who has never tried such a toy before! I tried doing kegels with the toy inserted, which was quite entertaining for a while.

The silicone is the biggest magnet for lint, so it requires a clean place to settle in. While this makes for an unattractive look, it wasn't my first concern during my play sessions. It was incredibly easy to get clean with soap and water, which is one of the best points for me.

Overall, I'm a little disappointed with Tina's performance as a clitoral vibrator. This is one I won't be using very often, but it may work for someone else with a preference for these types of vibrations.
Follow-up commentary
After about three weeks, Tina died out on me. For the entire length of time she was still functioning, I enjoyed her as my go-to vibrator in my small collection of toys just for ease of use. The battery compartment remained finicky and it took many twists and turns before I realized the motor would only run while the toy was bent at an angle. This is quite the opposite from what I had first experienced! I tried using the toy in that condition, but the vibrations were far too exhausting on my hand and nearly impossible to use bent against my body. Overall, I'm disappointed by the lifespan of my toy. For something that had so much potential, it fails to deliver in quality.
