Flour and water, all shook up in a mason jar. But it tasted like flour, so I'm guessing I used too much...lol.

The first department store to hold a Thanksgiving Day parade was Gimbell's Department Store in Philadelphia in 1920.

You also have to be sure to cook flour to get the raw taste out.

Green is better than red for PIE is a good rule of thumb---what really matters is the crispness/softness of the flesh. Think how mealy a red delicious apple is when you bite into it, and think how crisp a Granny Smith is.

Granny Smiths cook into much better pies. The Red Delicious would just get mushy---in a not-good way.

When I can get to an orchard, I make apple pies with a variety of apples called Greenings... but I wasn't by an orchard this year.

It's quite flaky! It's honestly my go-to crust, and I got blue ribbons at the fair when I was a youngster.

I think it's as flaky as butter---it doesn't have the delicious butter flavor, but the ease of working with the dough makes up for it, and the flakiness is just as good.

I can't do a lard comparison for you, because I think lard tastes gross.

Actually, it might be that you used too much---or it might be that you didn't get an emulsion with the fat. The gravy recipe will totally help you out!
