I got real lucky with this one, but it took 20 some odd shots to get it in focus.

Are you using the macro setting on your camera?

Wow, you know a lot.

I have tried that and it sometimes works but only when I am outside.

Good ambient lighting and steady hands.

Were you using autofocus? I assume this considering it's a P&S. If so, autofocus doesn't work well in low-light conditions. Even indoors can be low light. You may also have been inside the camera's minimum focus range (i.e., you were to close for the camera to focus). Your camera manual should have your minimum focus distance in it.

Is there something that says macro? I have a bunch of pictures for the settings. No words. I know nothing, unless it is Auto! My husband is hoping I will learn something!

You have a point and shoot right? I also sometimes have trouble with getting that blow out kind of effect. Do you have the flash on? I think if you adjust the ISO that may help? Thats what I usually do with mine. Also my camera has a setting for macro or infinity. If yours also has this maybe you should try that as well.

That's what I use to get decent close-ups. I just make sure I have sufficient lighting.

I usually do 90 seconds for any night sky stuff, but then, I've never seen the aurora either.

I modified my tripod to fit my camera, ya that does help. Seems lighting is the main problem when inside. Either it is to bright or to dark.

The macro is the one that looks like a tulip (on my camera)

There are macro settings on many cameras (and to a point, lenses).

I can adjust the focus. It looks good when I take the shot but it very rarely comes out good.

It lets you shoot a lot closer to your subject without losing focus.

It may simply be the shutter speed. Much below 1/60th of a second is hard to get sharp while hand-holding. If you're using a tripod, well... I'll need to think about that.

I might have missed this but is there a theme for the photos we post in tumblr and can you add the pics to tumblr if you're not registered???

It would be nice to get a theme such as showing practice with ISO or soemthing like that...

The theme will be posted in a few minutes. It won't be a theme specific to ISO (or shutter speed, or aperture), but I want everyone to emphasize them.

My camera won't let me adjust the shutter speed if I also want to adjust the ISO. Is this common in point and shoots? It drives me nuts!

I am amateur, love photography. I would like to have an expensive camera but for now I stick with my sweet little Canon.

I use a Powershot SX110 IS 10X optic zoom (wish I had more zoom).

I really like those pictures where you have a person in focus and everyone else is blurry, or when the person in the foreground is black and the background illuminates their silouette.

Mine does not tell the shutter speed. It just says, for example "Sport, for fast moving objects"
