I don't see why there would be issues with this feature. It takes a second to turn it off and be done with it. Personally I really like it, I want people to be able to see when I am online for when they have a question about something. Or just want to talk. But I guess a good chunk of people don't want anyone to know exactly when they are on. Maybe they just don't want to talk to anyone? Or be harassed etc.
I think it's an important step to making EF more social in a sense. Mentors and students can use the feature to know when they are online rather than guessing. But we are all different I guess
Personally, I don't necessarily have an issue with the feature. I just find it to not be very helpful and instead misleading, especially if it does not automatically change your status to offline after 5 minutes of inactivity.
Generally if I am contacting someone in the community, there is a specific reason I am contacting that person. Therefore, whether or not they are currently on does not impact whether or not I attempt to contact them. Also, I am almost always near my computer or phone, and with notifications, I have immediate access to respond to any notifications if I choose.
I think more helpful would be if the front forum page simply listed all contributors currently online and accessing the forums with the option to hide your status.
