Phobia's

I am beginning to struggle with Agoraphobia and I was wondering what phobias other Eden people have and how you deal with these fears.

I included a list of the top ten phobias but this is not limiting, leave comments below.

I don't have any phobias that I am aware of... though I don't like the idea of swimming with sharks.

Never gone to therapy, but most of my phobias are due to one particular experience. I am certainly an arachnophobic! I checked the box for Astraphobia too because I freak when thundering or lots of wind occurs. I wouldn't actually go so far as to call it a phobia, but we had severe tornadoes last year (first time ever in our area!) and now nearly everybody here FLIPS over thunderstorms. I get some pretty rough anxiety, but nothing that I can't manage with lots of activity until it passes.

The other phobia was due to that particular bad experience so at one time I think I was at least borderline Androphobic/Arrhenphob ic, but it's gotten better. It still has not entirely gone away and I get tremendous anxiety around some men. Not all, but for years I did do well when being left alone with men. That's understandable considering what I'd gone through, but I think I'll always have suspicions and anxiety when I am alone with men (besides family and my partner). I didn't go to therapy for any of the problems associated with that "experience" of mine, but my partner and I struggled a lot for 4 years. I FINALLY made it to a breaking point, I guess you would say sometime last year and I'm like a new person! Those things never go away, but I can finally relax without having any sort of breakdown.

Other than those few extreme fears, I have bad fears that do limit me in many ways, but nothing I could consider a phobia. I don't like to use terms like that lightly. I can be scared of something without it being a phobia, but those that I mentioned, I truly believe were beyond abnormal. I have a fear of strangers going near my booty (such as during a pap exam) to the point where I've freaked when it was brought up (and refused it) but I wouldn't call it a phobia as it really doesn't limit or hold me back in life. Lol. I'm terribly afraid of messing up or failing at particular things, but not anything too phobic-like.

I am level 1 agoraphobic, and I also have an extreme fear of falling, to the point where I've gone down unfamiliar stairs in public, on my ass, on more than one occasion. I also hug walls, even on very wide balconies. The agoraphobia is something I can usually tolerate enough to function, though I tend to be twitchy. The one exception was going to NYC for a college media convention. We were there for three days and on the last day I freaked out and when I came home I didn't leave the house for two weeks. It's good to push myself into situations like that, since that's how you cope with anxiety, but that one was too much at once.

ETA: To the OP, if you suspect you are starting to become agoraphobic, especially if you're experiencing frequent panic attacks and don't know what your triggers are, I suggest asking your doctor for a recommendation for a cognitive behavioral therapist. It can be very difficult to ask for help, and agoraphobia is one that will continue to get worse if you do nothing. Even if you have no idea HOW a CBT will help you, go find one. If you don't like the first one, find another one. The biggest aid to helping manage any mental illness is the support of someone else. You're not alone.

I don't have a specific phobia but I do know of friends who have them. You're not alone!

Thanks so much Raigne,
I have been seeing a wonderful psychologist for a couple of weeks now and she is super helpful. I also love how supportive everyone on Eden is!

I am having a party at my house this month and I have been have such nervousy panicked moments about all those people, I want to stay comfortable but I also miss seeing my friends. It is definitely tough to push myself but it has become a lot worse of the last couple of months (school stress and the like).

I have apiphobia (also called melissophobia), a fear of bees and similar insects. I used to be pretty much incapable of going near a bee or wasp, and would completely freeze upon noticing they were nearby. Since my route to work pretty much guarantees I'll have to go past them during the summer, I've gotten a bit better. Now so long as I can give a berth of several feet, I'm okay, but they still make me nervous, even though my rational mind knows they aren't usually going to bother with people.

It's a lot worse if I find one indoors, which can cause a panic attack. Last summer I spotted a cicada killer (incidentally, one of the calmest and most harmless types of wasp) while at work, and I actually collapsed in front of a bunch of customers. Thankfully I only had about fifteen minutes left on my shift.

I don't know what most of the phobias on the list refer to. I do have social anxiety/phobia, but I am in therapy and trying to work on it.

I had agoraphobia for awhile. It's slowly getting better.

It was worst when I was really heavily smoking pot. The only way I got better was slowly pressuring myself to interact in those spaces and to stop smoking.

I hope you're able to get through it soon! Agoraphobia was AWFUL

I've actually had severe anxiety since about June of last year, out of the blue. It just kinda.. comes on. It happens when I am out and about or even at home, full blown panic attack mode. I have also had a medical condition since June of last year so I am hoping the severe anxiety doesn't last for ever. I am seriously so fucking social. I don't understand it.

The mind and body are connected. If both had the same period of onset, I would bet they are are related.

Entomophobia - fear of bugs or insects It's the only thing that still can give me nightmares so bad I have to completely wake up and turn on all the lights.

I used to have rather sever social anxiety, but I am on medication for it now, which makes it manageable.

My mother struggled for many years with agoraphobia, so I have a good idea what you are going through.

Mine is germophobia. I blame it on my microbiology courses and over a decade in the health care field. How do I deal with it? I clean my hands about a thousand times a day. Plain soap, antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, and my personal favorite, Avaguard. Avaguard is this awesome waterless hand cleaner that's strong enough to be used to prep before surgery.
