Nearly 18 years ago, I attended the Bat Mitzah where I met someone's uncle, who was showing us this incredible invention of his- plastic tape that stuck to itself using static electricity. He was using it to hold his wallet shut. I honestly have no idea if this man was actually the inventor of bondage tape, but I remembered this incident when bondage tape first came onto the market years later. Probably not the use he intended...

So yes, bondage tape. This is a reel of a thin, shiny, translucent PVC not unlike the material that all of my clubbing outfits were made of in the '90s. It feels smooth and has a small amount of stretch/give to it, but is not highly elastic. It's 2" wide and can be cut or torn to your specified length, though tearing it can be tricky unless you apply the correct amount of force to it. I bought it in black, but it's also available in red. It is in theory re-usable, but cleaning/respooling it seems a bit more trouble than it's worth to me. The idea is that this sticks to itself, so you can use it to bind arms, ankles, etc. or use it as a quick blindfold or gag (definitely a must have for the portable toy bag.) If you are small-chested and ambitious, you could also theoretically whip up a kinky tube top from this stuff. You could probably mummify someone with it if you were willing to use the whole roll. And as uncle so and so will tell you, it's a great all purpose household product- I use it to tie up loose cords and such.

Using bondage tape is something of an art form. While it sticks to itself and not to your skin , it doesn't really stick if it's slack. You must keep it absolutely flat and taut when wrapping, or it will not stay put. When I first bought a roll years ago, I quickly and haphazardly used it to try to restrain someone, and found that it very quickly bunches up and won't stick to itself. You must hold down the end of the tape and pull it taut as you wrap, making sure the tape stays absolutely flat and tight as it overlaps itself. You will need to wrap at least 2-3 times to get it to stick tightly, 1 wrap is generally not going to stay put. Going slowly and paying attention is key here. However, once you've got the hang of it, it's pretty easy to use. Also take care not to get it wet, as this will affect the static bond of the tape.

If you apply it carefully, it should stay put pretty well. However, if your sub struggles a lot, if it gets wet, or it wasn't applied properly it can bunch or come loose. If you want absolute, fool-proof restraint, or something that can be put on quickly, this may not be your best option. I don't think bondage tape can truly replace rope or handcuffs, but it is a fun and interesting alternative, especially for themed scenes (kidnapping, anyone?), play parties, and for people who have a fetish for shiny stuff. I really enjoy having it in my toy box, and the sheer industrial aesthetic of it. If only I could overcome my guilt around throwing it away after use!
