Gated barbed wire flogger - flogging toy by Ruff doggie styles - review by Red Vinyl Kitty

This flogger is, without a doubt, intended for hardcore players and masochists only. Beginners be warned: the pain felt from a couple of softer swings of this flogger equal the same pain I get after thirty or more minutes of heavy swings from other floggers. If you want to be teased and seduced, look elsewhere. If you enjoy severe bruises, pain, and want to have your skin marked, welcome to the right place. I want to stress that if you do not like marks or lots of pain then this is absolutely not your toy.


For those who wield: This flogger is fun and easy to use because of the extra long handle. If you want something that won't tire your arms out quickly, this is a great one to reach for. Be aware, however, that the tails are somewhat long, and can be difficult to keep from tangling. Definitely practice with this a couple of times before unleashing it on your partner.


For those who receive: Do not buy this for your partner if you have a passing interest in impact play, or if you can't have marks for whatever reason. This is a formidable implement capable of real damage. Be warned.

This flogger is absolutely gorgeous. It is very long, at just over thirty inches, not including the hanging strap, but including the handle. The hanging strap is 4.5" long, and while you could put this around your wrist during play, the handle is long enough that I personally don't think you need to do that. The handle itself is 9" long, with 6.5 of those inches being grip-able, while the tails are 21" long.


There are two different types of tails in this flogger, suede and leather. The suede tails are a gorgeous deep red, and are almost a half inch in width. The leather tails are very hard and are approximately a quarter of an inch in width at the braided parts, and a half inch in width at the barbed portions. Each barb has four little leather "spikes" sticking out which catch the skin and are the main reason why this flogger hurts so much when applied. Each barbed tail has seven barbs all in approximately the same spots.


The construction of this toy is just lovely, and with proper care, the toy should last you a lifetime. The handle has a fun checkerboard style weaving of both black and blood red leathers, which feels great in the palm and are a feast for the eyes. The two round "bulbs" where the falls and hanging loop come out of are both wrapped in a herringbone type of pattern with black leather. They are wrapped over some sort of hard material, though I'm unsure what it is. It could be hard plastic, but my first thought is that it is probably wood or something similar.


The Gated Barbed Wire Flogger has a lovely leathery smell, if you like that.

For those who wield: The Gated Barbed Wire Flogger is easy to use with one or two hands. If you hands are small, you should have no problems fitting them on the handle together in the long thin space for gripping. However, if your hands are too large for that, you could always put one hand on either the top or bottom "ball". You should be able to work this flogger just as easily with one hand, although the tails do not always want to go where they are told.


I highly recommend practicing using this on a pillow or chair before using it on a person. Since the suede of the flogger is heavier than the leather barbed strips, sometimes the barbed pieces want to fan out and cause widespread impacts. This is wonderful and fun on certain body parts, but you do want to make sure you have this bad boy under control so you don't wrap spots where you don't want to wrap. Likewise, if you are playing with someone who enjoys stingy over thuddy, this may not be your best bet. There is definitely a bit of sting, and if you should choose to hit only with the very tips of the flogger - it will sting a bit more. However, I found personally that the main sensation of this toy was thud.

While I am not a Top, my husband was able to use this on me a lot longer than he was with most other floggers. The long length of the tails meant that the weight was spread out, and as a result his arm didn't get tired. His hands are also quite large, and he didn't have any problems with the handle.

This flogger is more likely than most to cause cuts and abrasions. Should you cut someone using it, it is very important to not share this with anyone else. A leather cleaner can be used as needed, but try to keep your flogger away from water. Water makes leather sad.

The flogger came with a simple tag which was easily removed. It had no instructions of any sort, but they are not really needed either.

The first time we used this toy, we cut my back almost immediately using moderate strokes. By the end of the first session, I had blue bruises peeking up from certain spots on my skin, and lots of red spots. The spots were not blood, more like little tiny bruises. We already are unable to share this flogger because of this. If you plan to play with other people with this flogger, you will most likely need to have a flogger for each partner you wish to play with. Leather is porous and therefore, it cannot be sterilized.


I was very impressed with how thuddy this was! I was sure that the flogger was going to be a bit stingier because of the barbs, but it really didn't. After a mere five strokes, I felt my back beginning to throb and feel warm. While I like this sensation, many people may not. I really recommend going with something lighter if you are new to impact play.
