An Icicle that Won't Melt

This one seemed like such a great idea. A glass toy that could also vibrate if I wanted it to? It sounds like an ideal situation. In the end I was disappointed. It's too skinny, way too loud and the paint is flaking and chipping. I can't recommend this toy. If you don't mind chipping paint and a loud toy, you might like this one for the vibrations it provides and the smooth glass, but there are better choices out there.

Use

The Icicles No. 4 is a glass dildo with small bullet seating in a ring at its base. It's a marriage of the glass dildo and the g-spot vibrator. It could be used for external stimulation of the clitoris, or internal stimulation vaginally or anally.

If you are using it clitorally, you can hold the shaft against yourself for broader stimulation or use the tip for pinpoint stimulation. If you insert the No. 4 vaginally, the spirals on the shaft provide some stimulation while you thrust the toy. The short hook at the end of the glass dildo is designed for g-spot stimulation. As with all g-spot toys, how well it reaches your g-spot will depend on your particular anatomy. Because there is a small ring on the dildo, the toy is fairly safe for anal play if used with caution. The bullet being inserted in the ring gives it more width, and a degree more safety for anal play. Although its pink color and swirly design lead you think of it as a girly toy option, I see no reason why the toy couldn't be used by men as well, for anal play. The bullet could also be used alone.

It is on the skinny side, so it is an approachable toy for beginners. It could be used by a couple, or for solo use.

Material / Texture

The dildo of the Icicles No. 4 is made of borosilicate glass, which is better known as Pyrex, and rates a 10 out of 10 on the Eden Safety Scale. It is the same material used in bakeware and dishes the world over and is non-porous. Borosilicate glass is engineered so that, if is does happen to break, it breaks into large chunks instead of tiny slivers. The surface is smooth and very slick. The dildo doesn't have any bend or flex to it, which allows you to angle it where you'd like to apply pressure.

The only texture on the dildo comes from the swirl of glass that winds its way down the shaft of the toy. This swirl is clear glass, with a pink applied paint. The paint has started to chip and flake, with fading as well. I thought the swirl was pink glass, but it isn't. I am disappointed that paint was used at all, and even more disappointed that the paint used isn't holding up well. The swirl does add stimulation when you thrust the toy; it is sort of a studder. I wouldn't say it is enough texture to bother the average user, and it won't be enough texture for those who love tons of bumps or nubs. There is no smell or taste to the dildo portion.

The bullet and control pack are made of hard plastic, which is non-porous and rates an 8 out of 10 on the Eden Safety Scale. The only way the plastic will come in contact with you is if you use the bullet alone. The surface of the bullet is very smooth, with no texture. The bullet and controller have a very faint plastic smell and no taste.

Design / Shape / Size

To be honest, the design of this one confused me a little bit. The shaft is of uniform width, and I would have liked to see a bit of variety or increasing diameter. The same diameter allows for more even thrusting, but it's limiting in terms of sensation. The shaft is fairly skinny, which makes it beginner friendly but will leave those who like more width wanting more.

The dildo is 7" long with a 5 1/2" insertable length. The last 1/2" of the shaft curves slightly, to enable more G-spot pressure. The ring at the base of the dildo measures 1 1/4" in diameter.

The bullet is small, measuring just 1 1/2" long and just over 1/2" in diameter. The cord which connects the bullet to the control pack is 22 1/2" long. The control pack is 4 1/2" by 1 1/2", and is around 5/8" thick. It fits nicely in the palm of your hand, and doesn't become uncomfortable with prolonged use. The pink on the bullet/control pack coordinates nicely with the pink spiral on the dildo portion of the toy, which gives it a classy look.

One thing I don't like about the design is that the control pack is translucent. You can see the batteries through the pink plastic, and I find that cheap looking.

I wouldn't call this toy discreet. The dildo portion isn't phallic, but it would be hard to explain away as something other than a dildo. The bullet looks like what it is, and couldn't be anything else either. Put the two together, and this can not be called anything but a sex toy. I wouldn't suggest leaving this one out on your coffee table or book shelf. For the same reasons that it wouldn't be a good idea to leave it out, it wouldn't be ideal to take it with you on a trip. It would be hard to explain that it was anything but a sex toy if you were asked by the TSA.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The bullet has a corded control pack, which is where the buttons are that control the toy. There are two buttons, which are at either end of a long plastic segment. The bottom buttons controls turning the bullet on and off, the top button cycles you through the 10 different vibration settings.

The functions are :

1-Low Steady
2-Medium Steady
3-High Steady
4-Pulse
5-3 Quick Pulses Followed by 1 Long Pulse
6-Ascending and Descending Steady Rollercoaster
7-Ascending and Descending Pulse Rollercoaster
8-A Studdering Pulse Variation
9-A Slow Pulse Followed by a Bunch of Quick Pulses
10-A Throbbing, Nearly Steady Pulse

The vibrations created by the bullet are very buzzy, with not even a hint of rumble. The bullet is a tiny, angry bee that is all buzz. I noticed that it does tend to lead to a numb or itchy hand if you use this for too long. The bullet does do a good job of getting the entire shaft to vibrate, which shocked me, but the vibrations created aren't intense. They are the strongest closest to the ring, where the bullet is seated, which makes sense. I will say having a control pack is fairly nice, as it really limits hitting buttons accidentally. The control pack takes 3 AAA batteries, which last a good long time.

The bullet heats up slightly after being on for more than a few minutes. I don't know if eventually the bullet will overheat. It hasn't happened to mine, and I've left it on for nearly 25 minutes at a time. At the end of that 25 minutes, the bullet is very warm, but still functioning well.

The major issue I have with the function of the Icicles No. 4 is volume. This is one of the loudest vibes I've owned, with the most rattle. You can hear this one over the covers, through a closed door and possibly outside your window. It is VERY loud. It was so loud it shocked me. You could never use this vibrator and not alert a roommate to exactly what you were doing. It could probably be heard through the walls of a dorm, so it is far from discreet. Honestly, even if this toy felt amazing, the extremely loud noise that goes along with it would be enough to make me dislike it and not suggest it to others. I found the noise so distracting that I wasn't able to climax from this toy.

The bullet and control pack aren't waterproof, so you can't take this toy in the shower or bath with you. I suppose there is nothing to stop you from using just the glass portion in the shower, if it works well for you without the vibrations.

Care and Maintenance

The glass dildo portion of this toy can be washed with soap and water or your favorite toy cleaner. If you wish to sterilize it, you can boil it, wash it in the dishwasher or wipe it down with a 10% bleach solution. It is easy to clean, with no small grooves or seams to collect fluid or gunk.

The bullet/control pack cannot be submerged. They can be wiped with a damp cloth if they need to be cleaned. If you wish to sterilize the plastic portions of the toy, you can wipe them with a 10% bleach solution.

Water, silicone or oil based lubes can be used with the Icicles No. 4, so feel free to use whatever lube if your favorite. The toy doesn't come with a storage pouch, so you can keep it in it's original packaging, or store it where you store your other toys. No surface of the Icicles No. 4 collects lint or hair, but please check the toy over for damage or debris before use.

Packaging

The Icicles No. 4 comes packaged like each of the Icicles, in a classy black box with a cut out window and a flap on the front of the box. The flap is closed magnetically, and beneath it the toy is visible through a clear plastic window. Both the dildo and the bullet/control pack are nestled in a block of thick foam, with no wiggle room. The inside of the flap details the functions of the bullet and how to clean the toy.

It does look expensive, and would be suitable for gifting. I think adequate instructions are included, and enough care information is provided so that anyone receiving it would know what to do with it.
    • Good for storage
    • Would make a nice gift

Experience

I wanted to like this one, but I just can't make it past the noise level. It is SO loud! Granted, I really don't like loud toys, but the distracting rattle of plastic bullet against glass really ruined my enjoyment of the toy.

After just two washes, I noticed that the pink paint was flaking and chipping. I was shocked. I assumed that the pink was pink glass; I would never have guessed they'd just paint a clear glass swirl with pink. So, what does that mean? What kind of paint is it? Is it body safe? There is no information noted about the contents of the paint. I don't care for the fact that paint with unknown contents is included on a toy that is going to be inserted. Ick.

Follow-up commentary
The chipping paint and loud vibrator were just too much for me, I really couldn't see a reason to keep it. This one has been thrown away.

Holy crap! I can see in the very last picture how much of the paint has come off!! That's scary! This gives me one more reason for me to keep covering my toys with condoms for each use, even though I trust the ones I own to be body safe.
