The Understated Interlude: Doin' all the right things without much fuss

The Interlude is a decent traditional vibrator made of decent material. It's got a good power, a standard range of speeds and it's fully waterproof (and floats!). While the experienced user might find it a bit bland, the Interlude would make a great, if slightly girthy, first toy. Despite not being particularly innovative or mind-blowing, this is still a satisfying toy that I confidently recommend, though hopefully newer incarnations will fix the button placement flaw.

Use

This traditional vibe works best vaginally, providing a nice full feeling and easy, satisfying thrusting. Though it can be used clitorally, the bulky size and shape of the Interlude makes it fail at any kind of pinpoint stimulation. Still, the vibrations are quite good and are located in the tip of the toy so clitoral stimulation isn't totally out of the question by any means. The larger size of the toy makes it nice for an all-over vulva massage as well. This toy is totally waterproof so feel free to take it along on any sexy aquatic adventures.

You'll want to avoid using the Interlude anally as it lacks a flared base that would keep it anchored safely outside the body.

Material / Texture

The insertable length of the Interlude is made of smooth, firm but flexible TPR. It's squishable, but all the hard internal workings of the vibe stop the TPR covering from squishing down very far. The very tip, being completely TPR, is the squishiest part of the toy. The Interlude's surface has a little bit of drag when dry, but lubes up nice and slick. It also has some lint/hair-collecting tendencies, but nothing too crazy. If you store it in the box it comes in there shouldn't be too much of an issue with this, and should it manage to gather any dust a quick rinse will easily fix it up.

Very slight ridges run vertically down the insertable length of the toy, but are for the most part not noticable during use. They may help streamline thrusting, but honestly I can't tell whether that's just psychological or not. Either way, the ridges are a nice feature of the toy if even just for aesthetics.

The toy has an extremely faint scent that can really only be smelled when you have the toy right up to your nose (and I don't know about you but that's not often where it is for me) and no taste at all. TPR is phthalate-free and body-safe but a bit porous, so remember to use a condom if you're sharing this toy.

Design / Shape / Size

For some reason, I'd expected the Interlude to be a slimmer vibe. Not so! This lovely thing is nicely filling at 4¾” circumference (but not too filling, this isn't gonna be the prize of the Size Queen Convention). The TPR does have some give to it and makes for more comfortable use even if one is only accustomed to slimmer toys. The head of the toy tapers slightly, which helps with initial insertion.

The Interlude is a traditionally-shaped vibrator, which is to say it's straight without a curve in sight. Hitting the g-spot is not what this toy aims to do, so don't bother trying. The Interlude's shape is much more suited to straight thrusting. For an extremely similar toy that DOES provide g-spot stimulation, check out the G-Harmony.

That said, it's super bendy and flexible and can be bent from the middle about 45degrees. You can twist the toy and see the TPR moving over top the motor, and when you bend it you can see where the pieces of the internal workings come apart.

I had some worries that bending it too far could cause this weak spot to tear, but so far I haven't had any trouble with that at all (and I was pretty vigorous in my bending experiments). Still, I'd recommend not pushing it past where it comfortably bends.

Functions / Performance / Controls

Wonderfully, the Interlude is totally waterproof and not only that: it floats! It was motoring itself around my sink while I was testing its submergable factor. This makes it, in my books, an even more fun bath toy: once you've come to your heart's content, throw in some toy boats/ducks/whatever and play like a kid! I feel that the Interlude makes an excellent purple submarine/torpedo.

Standard in its functions, this toy has three speeds of vibration and no fancy functions. A button at the base of the toy serves as the controls: pressed once it turns on to the lowest speed, pressed a second time takes you to the middle speed, a third time will bring it up to the highest setting and a fourth press will turn the toy off. Very simple. The vibrations themselves are pretty good, especially on the highest setting. If I put the toy to the tip of my nose when it's on high, my top lip goes numb and I can feel all the little hairs in my nose vibrating. Not quite sneeze-inducing, but close. It's a good, solid buzz provided by only two AA batteries. However, the bullet is located in the tip of the toy and the vibrations don't travel all that well throughout the body, so keep in mind that when fully inserted the vibrations will be somewhat cervix-centred.

This isn't exactly a silent toy, but the noise level is pretty tolerable. I wouldn't use it with the bedroom door open at all, but I don't feel the need to turn on any music or anything if I'm using it with the door shut. A reasonable noise level for the power (especially for the price!).

The only complaint I have about this toy is the annoyingly placed control button. The base of the Interlude tapers out to a sort of point with the button at its tip. When one is using the toy on themselves, they generally hold the toy by the base where the button can be very easily accidentally pushed. If used on a lesser setting an accidental upping of speed might not be such a bad thing, but if you're using the toy on the highest setting it's extremely frustrating because pushing the button turns it right off. What an unwelcome interruption! For this reason I also highly recommend taking the batteries out of this if you're planning to travel with it because it could easily get bumped and turn on.

Care and Maintenance

The waterproof factor makes this easy to clean with no worries about cleaning your toy into water-damaged uselessness. Warm water and soap or toy cleaner will clean this up nicely. Because TPR isn't sterilizable, you'll want to use a condom if you're sharing this.

TPR is compatible with both water based and silicone based lubes.

Packaging

Like most Evolved products, the Interlude comes in gorgeous packaging that makes for lovely presentation if gift-giving. The Interlude's box is cherry red metal with a window in the cover that displays the product. Inside, the Interlude lays on two layers of foam, the top layer having a cut out in the shape of the toy so that the vibe stays put in front of its display window. The cover of the box is held in place by two snaps on either end of the box's body. If you have the space for it, this packaging is perfect for storing the Interlude. If you're tight on space, you can of course take out one or both layers of foam and throw in some other toys to be stored as well.

The back of the box lists the toy's features as well as a music-related blurb about how the Symphony Interlude is "worthy of an encore!", etc. Cheesy but cute.
    • Good for storage
    • Would make a nice gift

Personal comments

Honestly, that button placement is a real buzz kill for me with this one. This toy has lots of good, though standard, features going for it but I keep turning the damn thing off while I'm trying to use it! Arg! During one session I accidentally turned it off four times and almost gave up on the thing for the night. I'm trying to figure out a better way to hold it or some other way around the issue, but I haven't found one yet. Perhaps during use with a partner this problem will disappear, but I use this toy much more often solo. If I find a solution I'll put it into my follow-up review.

This toy would've got 4 stars from me but I had to take one off because of the button frustration. A true 4-star toy would stay on faithfully during use, I feel.

Excellent review---not only was all the information good, but your tone was enjoyable to read the whole way through. I am glad to know that this would make a good submarine or torpedo, should I ever line up a row of rubber ducks.
