Taormino gives her own spin on a relationship style that is gaining above ground recognition. Typical of Taormino this book is well-researched, emotional, and personal. Highly recommended.

Opening Up” by renowned “sex-pert” Tristan Taormino is her latest foray into alternative sexuality. Opening Up is one of the most comprehensive books on the subject of open-relationships. It presents polyamoury as yet another valid relationship style and does not disparage monogamy like some other books about open-relationships. The organization of the book is concise and well done. You are able to find certain subjects – such as compersion and legal issues of raising kids in a polyamourous house-hold. Taormino writes honestly and frankly about people who make polyamoury a part of their life. The way that Taormino incorporates the stories of real people who is seamless and relevant to the chapter topics.

Taormino continues her direct and candid dissection of the polyamourous lifestyle. Taormino acknowledges that jealousy is a normal part of human emotion and that is a feeling that needs to be acknowledged, felt, and dealt with in a positive manner. She also introduces the concept of compersion – the experience of taking pleasure that one’s partner is with another person. This skill, in my opinion, is central to the success of poly-amourous relationships. Some have a natural inclination toward compersion and others have to work at it, this book gives you the tools to develop compersion for yourself.

Taormino puts a personal spin on the practice of poly-amoury by speaking on her own personal relationships. As someone who is practicing polyamoury, the need for resources that tell the real picture of our lifestyle are sorely needed. This book shows that poly-amoury is a valid lifestyle choice, yet not one that should be attempted or taken lightly. Living a poly-amourous lifestyle takes a lot of work and honesty. Tristan’s book is a tool that can help you develop the skills to practice a poly-amourous lifestyle if you so choose. Well written, well thought out and highly recommended.

Speaking as somebody who loves polyfidelity, I think this'd be a great book!

This book is on it's way to my boyfriend's house. I'm planning on kidnapping it. :) Thanks for the great review. I really look forward to it.

Do you think that as a sex expert she covers this topic well for someone that has been involved in non-monogamy or someone looking to consider it?

Yes, I believe that Tristan has a balanced approach to non-monogamy without being judgmental of those who choose to be monogamous.

  • Opening Up: A biased view of monogamy.
    • Does anyone else see that this book is incredibly biased? I've always agreed with the concepts of non-monogamy and polyamory, but I feel that monogamy can also be an educated choice. Every time I pick this book up and start reading it again, I'm offended by the way the book presents monogamy as something that's a total myth and that people are brainwashed into it by society.

Overall, it's got some good information, but I really think it's more geared to those who have already made the decision to be non-monogamous.

Does anyone else think this way?
    • I've not read it, but I'd just like to say one thing: If you're offended every time you read it, then stop! :D

I know, I know. This topic has come up in my relationship, so I'm trying to get more information on it. I mean, I agree with the point that they're making and everything and I'm a non-monogamy advocate, but this book drives me nuts.

I'm reading it to hopefully figure out why I'm so opposed to the idea in my current relationship.

  • Book- Opening Up
    • I just read the two reviews on the Book "Opening Up." Has anyone else read them or the "Ethical Slut?" I'm interested in starting a general discussion about books that look at non-monogamy or open relationships. ( I may need to review them all!)

I'm currently reading opening up. I just started yesterday. :)

I've read the "Ethical Slut." It was quite readable, but I believe it is geared toward people already receptive to open relationships--I don't think it's going to create a whole lot of converts.
