Makin waves - costume discontinued by DreamGirl - review by Breas

The Makin Waves costume by DreamGirl is available in sizes L- 3X/4X. I ordered the XL. I purchased this costume because honestly, I’m a sucker for costumes. I love having options for role-playing, costume parties, or Halloween. I figured that this outfit would be perfect for all of the above.

The outfit arrived in a durable, plastic package attached to a hanger. The bag has a snap closure at the back. Inside of the bag is a cardboard insert that states the outfit name, size, included contents, company name, company contact information, and a photo of a model wearing the costume. I love these bags to keep my delicate lingerie in, panties, bras, stockings, etc. I don’t find the packaging to be ideal for storing the costume though. I prefer hanging the costume in my closet or keeping them in a drawer.



The outfit consists of 3 pieces: the dress, the hat, and a long sleeved shrug. Inside of the packaging, the dress and shrug are wrapped around a thin piece of cardboard and the hat is in a separate plastic baggy. The outfit is 100% polyester. Both the shrug and dress have stretch to them but the hat does not have any stretch when it comes to width. I’ve taken measurements of the costume but if you need additional measurements, let me know and I can get them for you.

The hat is fairly simple. The top of the hat has a navy blue trim. The front centre of the hat has a gold coloured bow (1/2 inch x 1 inch) with a photo of an anchor beneath it. I tried placing the hat on top of my head like the model in the stock photo but it doesn’t fit me very well. There are two very small ribbon loops on the inside of the hat, one on each side. If you find the hat to be a bit small, you could attach a ribbon or fishing line to these loops so that the hat stays secure on your head.



The shrug is white in colour with navy blue trim. At the bottom of each long sleeve, there is a gold star (1 ¼ inches) on the outside of the sleeve. The cuff has navy blue trim and there is also navy blue trim above the gold star. The trim above the star is 3 inches from the bottom of the sleeve. This trim is ½ an inch. The shrug fit me in arm length but at the top area near my shoulders, the shrug seemed to be a bit baggy and loose on me. I tried adjusting the shrug to fit better but no matter what I did it just didn’t want to work.



The dress is absolutely adorable. Like the other pieces to the costume, the main colour is white with a navy blue trim. The only closure to the dress is the halter ties so to put the dress on, simply pull the dress down over your head, adjust the dress to sit perfectly on your body, and then tie the halter ties behind your neck! The cups to the dress are padded and have underwire.

I wear a C cup and I found the cups to this costume to be rather small. I wouldn’t suggest the size XL for anyone over a C cup. The problem I had was that the underwire didn’t sit beneath my chest. My boobs pushed the cups out making the underwire sit away from my body. Below is a photo of the underwire and how it sits away from my body. It’s actually much worse when I move. You can see this at the right hand side of the photo. Also, a lot of my boob didn’t fit into the cups so they sat outside of the cup instead.



Along the top of each cup, there is a thick navy blue trim (1 inch) with three golden coloured bows along each cup. Between the cups are two 8 ½ inch pieces of navy blue fabric. These pieces can be tied into a bow. There is a vertical navy blue line that runs down the cup and dress to the skirt. These lines do not run down the back as well. The back of the dress is white.

The skirt area of the dress is approximately 11 inches in length (from the horizontal line at the centre of the dress to the bottom). I’m 5’6 and this dress is rather short on me. When I wear the outfit without leggings, you can see the bottom of my bum cheeks. If you’re my height or taller and would prefer your bum cheeks to not be exposed, I suggest wearing a pair of leggings with the costume.

The bottom of the skirt is trimmed with a navy blue colour (2 inches) and a gold trim (¾ of an inch) on top of the blue. This trim runs around the entire bottom of the dress. At the front of the dress above this trim, there are 3 anchors with gold bows sitting above them. Between each anchor is a golden coloured star. The anchors, bows, and stars do not run around to the back of the dress. This design is only at the front. The stock photo makes the skirt appear to be a shinier material but the skirt is the same as the top of the dress. The material is quite thin but it is not sheer.

The material to the costume is soft and very comfortable against the skin. I don’t have any complaints of irritation while wearing the outfit. The care tag states that the outfit should be dry cleaned only.

Overall, this isn’t my favourite outfit but it’s not the worst either. I’ve deducted two stars from the rating for a few reasons. 1) The dress is short and exposes bum cheeks unless you wear leggings 2) the cups are way too small for a size XL 3) the shrug fits oddly. It’s also disappointing that the outfit is not available in any smaller sizes for those with smaller frames who want to wear the outfit.

If you do decide to purchase this outfit, order at least a size up for the cups. Below are 2 photos of me wearing the costume. The first photo shows a side view of the outfit while the second shows a front view. You can see in the front view how much of my chest is actually outside of the cups. Some people may like this for themselves but I personally do not.
