Cobalt Bubble Plug--Simply Excellent

The Cobalt Bubble Plug is quite simply my favorite plug. It's beautiful, functional, easy to use and easy to care for and did I mention beautiful? At three times the price, it would still be a good deal.

Use

This plug is great for anal use, either as a warm-up for larger toys or anal sex, or as a plug to wear for anal/p-spot stimulation during sex or solo play. I've seen other users write that they've used it for extended wear vaginally and even orally. I can only assume they're right. The base theoretically makes it harness-compatible but we've never tried it.

From my own experience, I can recommend this plug without hesitation for warm-up or anal/p-spot stimulation. It's well-designed for anal use, having a smooth surface, not one but two delicious bulges, a properly-sized neck to keep it in place and a wide base for anal safety. Because glass holds heat and cold well, it's also excellent for temperature play.

Material / Texture

This plug is made of tempered glass, which is a 'perfect' material for sex toys. Its hardness makes it easy to insert (especially in a shape like this), it's easy to clean, it's durable and it can be heated or cooled for temperature play.

The texture is perfectly smooth--smooth as glass, in fact! You will likely find that you don't need quite as much lube with this plug as you do with similar-sized toys. The smoothness also makes it easier to insert than more 'grippy' textures.

Of course, it's about as hard as something can be which means it won't flop around on you. That also makes for easy insertion. Because of the hardness, I recommend going slow and easy with this guy until you know how it fits your anatomy. It's completely unyielding which could be uncomfortable or even painful if mishandled. I'm happy to say I've never had any discomfort with this plug other than a little initial discomfort when I inserted it for the first time.

If you heat this toy or cool it down, it will hold that heat or coolness for a long time. No other material does this as well as glass (that I'm aware of). So whether you like your toys hot, cold or at normal body temperature, glass toys will make it happen for you. One caution: if you do boil this toy or wash it in the dishwasher, make sure it cools down before you touch it.

Design / Shape / Size

As you can see in the pictures on the product page (I didn't post any pictures of my own because it looks exactly the same as the pictures in the description), this plug has a 'classic' butt plug shape, with a twist. Well, a bubble to be precise!

The tip is about 1/2" wide and from there the plug flares out smoothly to 1 5/8" at its widest. But wait, there's more! Below the 1 5/8" bulge, it quickly narrows to about 1 1/4" and then comes the bubble which is 1 1/2" in diameter. Below the bubble is a 1" neck which is about 1/2" long; this helps keep the plug inside you once it's fully inserted. The base is over 2" wide. It will keep this plug from disappearing inside you (which would be BAD!) and also gives you a useful 'handle' for inserting/removing the plug as well as to hold during play.

This is not a beginner plug, nor is it for size queens. It's a great medium size and can be a stepping stone from beginner plugs to larger ones, or perhaps it's that 'just right' size you're looking for (as it is for me).

If I'd designed this plug, the only thing I would have done differently would have been to make the bubble wider than the initial bulge. This would have, in my opinion, made the plug slightly more useful as it would have been possible to use this as a warm-up for medium OR larger toys. As it is, you definitely feel the bubble too, but it doesn't give you any additional stretch. It probably looks better this way. A wider bottom bulge would have made it look kind of squat. Don Wands knows what they're doing!

Speaking of aesthetics, this is a truly beautiful toy. Before I ordered it, I thought "this is pretty cool-looking". When it arrived, I was awed by how beautiful it actually is. The blue glass is translucent and looks interesting in just about any light. To me, cobalt blue has a sort of retro, art-deco vibe. It looks timeless, like it could have been crafted long ago. My wife suggested, half-jokingly, that we display it on a shelf with other objets d'art! It wouldn't be terribly out of place, but anyone who knows sex toys would probably figure out what it is!

But with a total length of 5" (4 1/2" insertable by the way), it's small enough for travel. I'm paranoid about being publicly embarrassed by the TSA (or anyone else), so I seldom pack sex toys when I fly. I made an exception for this one.

Performance

My favorite thing about this plug is, well, just about everything! I own some other plugs, but this one is the most beautiful. It's big enough to prepare me for larger toys but not so big that it's a major production to insert. Once inserted, it stays put. It feels great when I use it for anal stimulation during solo play or sex. It doesn't quite hit my p-spot, but your anatomy may vary.

Care and Maintenance

Glass is super easy to care for. Just wash with soap and water. Boiling it a few minutes will completely disinfect it. You can even wash glass toys in the dishwasher. Glass is completely non-porous, meaning that it won't pick up odors or germs (provided, of course, that you clean it thoroughly after each use). You can use any kind of lubricant with this toy. Silicone, water and oil are all fine. Glass also doesn't pick up lint the way silicone (another otherwise great material) does.

A common misconception about glass toys is that they're fragile. I have seen some glass toys with delicate designs that looked like they might be fragile, but they are the exception. Most glass toys are extremely durable and the Cobalt Bubble Plug could last a lifetime with proper care. I've dropped a glass toy from 3 feet or so onto a hard tile floor and it didn't even scratch the toy. Unfortunately, it did crack a tile. I had to make up a creative story about that for the workman who replaced the broken tile! I'm sure it's possible to crack or break a glass toy but I've never done so or heard of anyone else doing so.

I store this upright on a shelf in my bedside table (which is really a small cabinet). It's probably better not to store glass toys in such a way that they could bang together. If that's a concern, you can store it in the padded pouch that comes with it.

Packaging

The plug comes in a simple clear plastic display box which contains the toy with a nice padded storage pouch (mine is light blue; other users have received pink or light purple pouches) and a sample packet of silicone lube. The package is not discreet; you can clearly see the toy through the clear plastic. The paper label on the package has a few simple care and use instructions. I recycled the packaging immediately. The pouch works great for storage and/or travel.

Personal comments

I chose the Cobalt Bubble plug because of the size, because I liked the way it looked and because of the price. A few years ago, glass toys were a bit rare and usually rather expensive. When I saw this for less than $30, I snapped it right up. It's turned out to be one of my best sex toy 'investments'.

Experience

As soon as it arrived, I ripped into the package like a kid on Christmas morning! After admiring its beauty, I washed it thoroughly and warmed it up to body temperature by soaking it in warm water for a few minutes. I applied some Astroglide lube to myself and the toy and then inserted it anally--too fast, as it turned out! Ouch! That was my 'hard' lesson about glass toys. I have a silicone plug roughly the same size which I can insert without having to warm up. I assumed this would be the same. But glass, because of its hardness, feels much bigger for the same size. Lesson learned, I waited a minute and tried again--this time more slowly and gently--and soon it was comfortably inserted. I left it in and enjoyed a nice session of solo pleasure, which was excellent! The anal stimulation from the plug gave me my first anal orgasm along with my penile orgasm. It's a wonderful sensation and one I've enjoyed many more times using this plug.

A few days later, I used it to warm myself up for pegging. We wanted to try our new Vixskin Johnny, which was larger than any dildo we'd used before. After warming up for just a couple of minutes with this plug, Johnny was no problem at all to insert. Since then, I almost always use this plug to warm up for pegging.

If they made this in a larger size, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Follow-up commentary
I'm really sorry to see that the Cobalt Bubble Plug has been discontinued. I still like this plug, although I haven't been using it as much since I got the Moon Shine plug, which has the same maximum diameter of 1 5/8 inches in a shorter length.

Since getting the Moon Shine, I've been using the Moon Shine to warm up for larger toys and the Cobalt Bubble for occasional anal/P-spot stimulation during solo play. The Cobalt Bubble stays in, making it a better solo play choice.

It's still the most beautiful plug on my shelf and I'm very glad I bought it. I hope Don Wands will release something similar in future, perhaps a plug with a "bubble" larger than the initial bulge.
