Urban Tantra - book discontinued by Celestial Arts - review by Liz

I decided to read "Urban Tantra" after reading Barbara Carrellas' "Luxurious Loving: Tantric Inspirations for Passion and Pleasure." I loved Carellas' accessible, inclusive style of writing, and the first book left me wanting a more in-depth exploration of Tantric practice. "Urban Tantra" proved to be exactly what I was looking for.

"Urban Tantra" covers a wide range of subjects. It begins with a brief, myth-dispelling introduction to Tantric practice. The content of the book is divided into five parts: (1.) Tantric basics, (2.) solo practice, (3.) partner practice, (4.) "adventurous" practice (incorporating Tantric principles in bondage play, domination, submission, group sex, etc.), and (5.) healing and transformation through sexual practice and sexual energy.

The most appealing element of this book is that it somehow manages to be incredibly informative and detailed, without taking itself too seriously. The author presents the material in a playful, conversational tone. The many wonderful exercises are described step-by-step, in great detail. This is an ideal guide for newcomers to Tantra, as it introduces the subject in a way that makes the reader anxious to try things out and learn more. The book is also highly inclusive in nature; it is very emphatically not directed toward any particular sexual orientation or preference.

In terms of design, the book is both durable and pleasing to the eye. The cover art is elegant and sensually appealing. The illustrations are very tasteful (not to mention useful!). The content is well-organized, and the print is easy to read.

I'm a relative newcomer to Tantra, and "Urban Tantra" was the perfect introduction to the subject. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest it for anyone unfamiliar with Tantric practice. However, I would highly recommend it to more experienced practitioners as well. There's so much wonderful information here, and very inventive suggestions for incorporating Tantra into modern life.
