ButterFLOP

Unless you are looking for something that is very affordable and very small, this may not be the toy for you. I honestly really wouldn't recommend it to most people because even if you are looking for affordable and small, there are better options on the market. This one just didn't do the trick for me, in its intended capacity or in any other that I tried.
Published: July 7, 2010
Pros:
small for beginners, not at all intimidating, easy to use
Cons:
made of jelly, very small, jelly doesn't carry vibrations well.

Use

The butterfly kiss is a small sized rabbit-style dual action vibrator. The shaft, head, and butterfly are made of smooth pretty pink jelly material and the thicker part of the shaft toward the base is embossed with hearts – upside down hearts, actually. It has a plastic base with a twist-off cap that allows you to insert two AAA batteries to make it buzz, and at the bottom of the cap, there is a single button that can be pressed to go through the three speeds of vibration the toy offers.

Material / Texture

The biggest problem for most people with this toy is that it is made out of jelly. Besides totally throwing off the vibrations of the toy, it’s a tricky material to begin with. It’s very porous and can cause skin irritation in some people. Since it can never be really sanitized, it is not made for sharing whatsoever. Normally people that want to use jelly toys without the risk or to be shared can cover the toy with a condom. Because of how drastically thin the shaft is and the fact that it is a rabbit vibe, covering it with a condom would be very difficult and make the toy pretty much useless. It also, as most jelly toys do, had a slight odor upon receiving it but it has faded with several washings and time.

Design / Shape / Size

The first thing I noticed about this toy is that it is on the small side for a rabbit style vibe. The insertable shaft is only about 3-1/2” long, and the shaft itself leading to the teardrop head is about ¾” across. Anyone who has used a jelly toy knows that it’s not particularly firm and this toy being so thin actually makes it jiggle and wave back and forth if you shake the toy a little. And yes, I know this because I shook it and waved it back and forth to see just how flimsy the jelly was (think lightsabre moves). The size and softness of the shaft also made it unable to hit my g-spot because there simply wasn’t enough pressure. If the toy was larger with the same shaped head, I think it would have worked much better.

The other small feature of the toy is how very close the butterfly shaped clit stimulator is to the shaft. There’s really no distance between them, so even for my smaller anatomy, it wasn’t quite able to reach the mark.

Functions / Performance / Controls

Once I turned the toy on, you could see the vibrations in the fluttering of the butterfly wings and the antennae, and they moved so fast they blurred on the 2nd and 3rd speeds. Since the shaft is thin jelly material it also vibrated on the highest speed when it wasn’t being used. When I used the toy, I put a little lube on it since jelly does have a bit of drag against your flesh. I used my go-to water based lube, Maximus, and I would recommend water based lubes with this toy because jelly is a non-standardized material and I’m cautious about any kind of reaction a silicone or oil based lube could have with it. If you have a strong preference toward silicone lubricants, it may work fine with this toy but it’s not a risk I was willing to take with it myself.

I've rated the 'vroom' level a 3 because of the testing I did with it outside of my body. Unfortunately, the vibrations you actually feel with this toy are closer to a 2.

Care and Maintenance

The toy can be cleaned with toy cleaner or warm water and soap, but drying it and storing it can be a pain because it will pick up fuzz from toys, dust from places it’s stored, and cannot be stored next to other jelly toys. Best bet for this one is its own separate container, and its original blister packaging would suffice for those who choose to keep it.
    • High maintenance

Experience

The first time I used the toy, I tried to see if the head and shaft had enough vibration to work well as a clitoral vibe. On all three speeds, my answer is it does not. When I insert this toy, the vibration in the shaft all but disappears, even on the highest vibration level. This is most likely because the vibrating element is in the base of the toy, not the shaft, and because jelly is so easily stilled or stabilized that the inside of my body basically stopped it from moving. Once I got the butterfly portion to a comfortable and pleasurable spot, I turned it on to the lowest speed and I could barely feel it. The little wings and antennae vibrate like crazy when they’re not touching anything but once they’re even SLIGHTLY pressed against skin, the jelly is once again, immobilized. On the second and third speeds, it was more noticeable because the vibrating element in the toy is much closer to the butterfly, but even if it had been placed on my clit, it wouldn’t have been strong enough to do much more than tease me. I never attempted to use this toy with a partner because it was barely effective for solo play, it just didn’t seem worthwhile.

The vibrations aren’t necessarily bad, but the flimsy jelly really holds them back. If someone is new to toys and intimidated by really strong rumbling toys, this may again be a good choice. It really works more as a tease or a warm up for a bigger, better, toy for me.
I took this toy into the shower once, cautiously. The seal on the inside of the battery compartment simply didn’t look thick or trustworthy enough for me to entirely submerge, but it did prove splash proof in the shower. Unfortunately since I choose to only use this toy with water based lube, it wouldn’t be worth me taking it into water on a regular basis.

The small size does however have some advantages in my book, besides it obviously being easy to conceal or travel with. First off, it was very easy to control once inserted. Granted it was simply shaped all wrong to get me off, but it still felt good and since the whole thing is so compact, it wasn’t a stretch to work the button at the bottom. For those who are looking for a first time toy on a budget, or are simply intimidated by large toys, this would be a good choice. The size makes it very easy to take and would work well as a stepping stone to larger toys. It is also fairly quiet and can be disguised under blankets with a closed door so it may work well for those living in a shared apartment or house situation that can’t have a huge toy that rattles through the whole place.
Follow-up commentary
Since this toy hasn't gotten any more sturdy or any more powerful, it's still just no good for me at all. It's resting comfortably at the very bottom of one of my toy drawers.

Oh, and if this one seems a little out of order, I apologize. I typed it up for the standard review format, and then realized I had started and saved the review previously with the extended template. I cut and pasted and trimmed and added and did my best to make it fit the template, so I hope it comes across OK

I vote no jelly at all!...silicone with a bit more space between the shaft and the butterfly would be awesome... I have very small anatomy and usually complain toys are too big but this was even too small for me!

  • i have experiment attraction to women,,, i´m bicurious?
    • hi my name is yesenia paris,, and i´m 22 but since i was in high school i kind of have curiosity for girls,, i never like really kiss a girl or anything or i never had any female friend to experiment that, like i am very shy person and also like a lonely girl,, althought i am a very pleasant person and i good human being ,, noone seens to like me,,, but although of that matter i still feel the curiosity may because i have never been with a girl before
does that make a bisexual,a bicurious,of it just because the loneliness or the lock of friends,, like i never have a real
girl friend ,, like it´s samething that happens with boys,, you are not friends with them ,, but you like them in a different way,,, i always thing it´s because my loneliness
and the need of an another ,, girl being friends with me i also don´t have a mom to call and talk about my problems maybe it´s because of that the confusion thanks have a nice day
    • Someone made a similar post a while back, and I'll basically tell you what we told her. Don't follow stereotypes. Don't label yourself. If you are interested in girls, then you just are. If you haven't experimented with girls, personally I feel that when I liked someone it isn't based on any particular factor, it is based on the person themselves. I tell people I am bisexual, but really I think of myself as pansexual, not limiting emotion and attraction to anything. Not gender, not age, not race, not social status.

I think that sometimes people can become lonely and will "settle", making them open their views and ideas of dating up, to allow "just anyone" to enter into their lives. My boyfriend was this way, before meeting me, dating anyone who would say yes because he had no friends, and had been hurt and heartbroken so badly he just wanted to feel loved and accepted. I also have a straight friend who dated women just so she could have someone to date, but she wasn't attracted to them, although she liked to experiment and have fun, she says she is straight, but I don't give her a label.

If you ever need a friend to talk to, I am a good listener :)
    • Excellent advice Peggi and I second that. We don't need labels...we're just people. I'm a good listener too.

  • What's up with different Butterfly Kisses?
    • When I bought my Butterfly Kiss I thought there were only 2 versions - the standard and the Platinum Edition. Since I couldn't find the PE in my country I went with the regular one. I was so bent on getting it after watching Kara Sutra's review of it. She said it was TPR. I got my Butterfly Kiss. On the packaging (plastic shell with a piece of paper) it said that it's "phthalate-free" and made of TPR. I'm inclined to believe it as it didn't smell, didn't turn ugly yellow even when I had it for more than a year, didn't sting my bits (jelly does).

Now, however I see those jelly Butterfly Kisses. What's the deal? Was my vibe mis-labeled or are there more than 2 versions? I still have the paper insert from the packaging if you'd like to see it. The vibe itself looks a bit more opaque than what I see in EF catalog - it's always looked like this.

I would also ask people from EF who deal with the Review Program. Is my Butterfly Kiss same as yours (and thus qualifies for a review) or is it a different product?
    • Hi there!! California Exotic Novelties was the 1st to come out with this fantastic design. & yes we only have 2 versions, the platinum & the original. Check it out on our website link

Many other companies have tried to duplicate our product but have had no success. We are the original creators with the best product :) Hope this helps!

It's the jelly - throw it away or always use a condom. Look for better materials like silicone or VixSkin.
    • I wouldn't even use a condom...just get rid of it and stay away from the material.

  • Jelly Deformation?
    • Well I loved this little bugger and it came at a bargain so I suppose I can't complain too much. But I whipped it out for play tonight only to find that the jelly seems to have dented and deformed itself on the lovely bulbous head. I had it in a pocket next to my turbo glider and I suspect with some heat and pressure, that's the culprit that did this. It has very odd dents/suctionish things on it now.

Is this prone to happen to jelly toys? Could it have been the California summer heat? I would like to prevent this from happening in the future.

But in case people are wondering, this a toy I would glady invest in again.
    • It is my experience that jelly toys just deteriorate really fast...the heat may have sped up this process though. I do know heat can cause more phthalates to leak out of jelly. It probably just kind of melted on you a little. I would have to say you should go ahead and get a new one or better yet, find a comparible toy in silicone! Silicone can be boiled so, heat shouldn't be an issue with it at all! It always sucks when one of your favorites melts.
    • Does your house get pretty warm? I've never had that problem and I live in AZ. Was it touching the turbo glider? Sounds like a toy material interaction to me.
