Silk is basically a plastic, waterproof bullet with a stainless metal alloy push button. It has a thin, body safe silicone sleeve around it. This isn’t just any silicone, however. All Key products are made with premium Shin Etsu silicone, considered to be the highest quality silicone in the world! Both plastic and silicone are totally non-porous and have no smell or taste.

The plastic bullet is completely smooth, while the silicone sleeve has a random pattern of slight ribs or wrinkles around it. The pattern of texture is very gentle and is not noticed during use, while the silicone feels smooth like velvet against your skin. It is not a major lint magnet, and has very little drag to it.

Key Silk’s smooth surface will be ideal for any user who likes a smooth, luxurious feel in their toys.

Silk’s design is a timeless classic. A diameter of just under 1” and a length of 4” allow you to slip this toy into a pocket or purse and take it with you almost anywhere for fun on the go! Great for travel, its petite stature will also allow you to hide this away almost anywhere while you’re home.

While this is a small, discreet toy, it’s big enough to give you plenty of handle to hold on to and control it during use. Since the silicone sleeve is so thin, it doesn’t dampen the vibrations, which is also a sign of smart design! Another smart aspect of Key Silk’s design is that the motor is down in the tip of the toy. That means it can deliver all of its power right where you want it.

The size and design of Silk also make it great for dual stimulation. It can provide clitoral stimulation, during partnered sex or penetration by another toy. While it will need to be held in place, it won’t interfere with thrusting, and that’s a big pro!

This toy has 1 push button on the end that controls it. The button is easy to push when you want to change settings, but is out of the way enough to not get accidentally bumped during use. Push it once briefly to turn the toy on, and to cycle through the 5 different settings. To turn your Silk off, push and hold the button for about 3 seconds. When you turn it back on, it will go back to setting 1. It only scrolls through the settings in one direction, so if you accidentally pass up the setting you want, just turn it off and start scrolling through again. The button does not have a locking function for travel, but you can just take the battery out and accomplish the same thing.

Following is the function chart from the company, followed by my own description of each of the functions. To standardize my vroom and bee ratings, I always use the Je Joue MiMi as a point of comparison. Please note that Key Charms Silk is buzzier than the MiMi.



The vibrations are focused in the tip of the toy. They can be slightly felt at the other end around the power button, but they are strongest in the tip that comes into contact with your body. This protects your hand from going numb while you use your Silk.

When pressure is applied to the Silk during use, the vibrations do disperse just a bit and feel weaker. So, the Silk will work better for users who do not require a lot of pressure along with their clitoral vibrations.

Key Silk is completely waterproof, thanks to a little clear o-ring around the battery compartment. It performs beautifully in the water. While Silk doesn’t lose any power when under water, it does become a bit quieter. That will be a big pro for many users!

This well-made toy is also very low maintenance! When you’re done using it, just toss it in the sink and wash it with warm water or your favorite toy cleaner. To sanitize, it can be soaked in a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water).

Be sure to check under the silicone sleeve each time you wash your Key Charms Silk. Water and soap can get between the bullet and the sleeve with normal washing, and it will need to be dried out if that happens.

With most external use, fluids, dirt, and lubricant should not get under the silicone sleeve. However, if you want to really give your Silk a thorough cleaning, the silicone sleeve can be peeled off. The sleeve could then be safely boiled or put through the dishwasher on the sanitize cycle, while the bullet could be soaked in the diluted bleach solution. To put the silicone sleeve back on the bullet, just fold down the top about half-way. Slide the end of the bullet in, and then slowly roll the rest of the sleeve up the bullet.

Key Silk runs on 1 AA battery. The easiest way to put the battery in is to roll down the top of the silicone sleeve. Give the cap a one quarter twist (counter clockwise) and it should come right off. Slide your battery in (with the + end down) and put the cap back on. Lastly, roll the silicone sleeve back up and you’re ready to play! Be sure to take the battery out for storage, because the power button is easily bumped. Also note that Jopen recommends using rechargeable batteries with this line of toys.

Use only water or oil-based lubricants with your Silk; the company warns that this line is not compatible with silicone-based or hybrid lubricants. If you decide to take the silicone sleeve off your Silk and just use the plastic bullet by itself, you can use any lubricant you have.

Like all toys, Key Charms Silk should be stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight. The box it comes in is ideal for storage, as is the satin drawstring pouch that comes with it. It could also be stored in an old sock, the leg of an old pair of pantyhose or tights, wrapped in tissue paper: the options go on and on!

The packaging with this toy is lovely and great for storage! It would also be great for gift giving because, even though you can see what’s inside (a sex toy), it is still classy and discreet since there are no naked people or suggestive scenes on the box.

*The Good
Usually, when I get a small toy that runs on 1 battery, I expect very little power. Silk actually packs a good bit of punch for a toy in its class, I was impressed! Of course I’m also a big fan of the high-quality silicone and the fact that it’s waterproof. It also has a good variety of patterned settings to choose from, which is also unique among toys this size.

I like that I can easily use it during penetration of any kind – with other toys or with a partner. I’m a huge fan of dual stimulation, and Key Charms Silk allows you to focus its vibrations wherever you need them with pinpoint accuracy.

Over all, I think this is really a perfect toy to toss into your handbag or suitcase for a sexy rendezvous with that special someone, or to simply spend some quality time with yourself!

~Design
I am not a huge fan of pinpoint stimulation. I love my MiMi, which provides vibrations over a much broader area. I don’t like having to be so exact and precise with my vibrator placement. That’s simply personal taste, though, because for many users that will be a big plus.

~Battery issues
I’ve read about many folks having a lot of trouble removing their batteries from their Key Charms toys. Mine is definitely a very snug fit; however, I haven’t had any major issues removing the battery. What works for me is to unscrew the lid, hold the toy firmly, and swing my arm downward, allowing centrifugal force to extract the battery for me. Be sure to do this in an area where the battery will fly onto a bed or a couch, rather than a hard floor where it will end up who knows where!

~Functions
While I enjoyed Silk’s 3 vrooms, I dislike the fact that it only has 1 power level. I never use the different patterns, so I would have preferred less patterned settings and more variations of power in the steady vibration mode. I don’t generally like start to off with 3 vrooms right out of the gate; I like to start off a bit lower and work my way up. By the end of my play session, I’m usually extra sensitive, so I prefer a lower setting then as well. That was a major con for me, even though the Silk definitely did work for me over all.

~Noise level
If you are looking for an extremely quiet toy that will work in a dorm situation, or with a roommate, you will probably want to keep looking. Although I have read a wide variety of experiences with the Key Charms line, it is certainly not “whisper quiet”. Mine did not have any additional rattling or other noises coming from it, so all I heard was the motor. It was loud enough to hear behind a closed door, unless there was some sort of background noise. So while the size would lend itself perfectly to cramped living spaces, the sound level may not work out quite as well for those who really need to be discreet while playing.
