Buy the ticket, take the Ryder.

The Ryder lives up to the hype. It's large enough to stay in place during use, but still remains reasonably comfortable.

Use

The Ryder butt plug is an anal toy, which can be used solo or with a partner during intercourse. Typically, plugs are used to achieve a sense of fullness in the rectum or in order to warm up for a larger toy. With some practice, the plug may provide some prostate stimulation in men. It can however be enjoyed by any gender. It does have a nice rounded tip and smooth texture, but the toy does not have much taper to it, so it's probably not well suited to those just starting out experimenting with anal play.

Material / Texture

The Ryder is made from 100% silicone which is at the top end of material safety scale. It has a smooth texture and has some give to it when you squeeze it in your hand. It doesn't seem to be quite as stiff as some other silicone toys that I own. This property helps with the comfort factor when wearing it for an extended amount of time.
    • No odor
    • Not porous at all
    • Smooth

Design / Shape / Size

The Ryder is available in three colors; black, purple, and copper. I choose the copper, largely because I thought it looked cool and I didn't have any toys that color.

The bulb of the plug has a nice rounded tip, but the bulb itself does not have much taper to it, so this is best suited for someone with some experience in anal play. At the base of the bulb, it tapers rather quickly to the neck. This transition helps keep the plug in place during use. The neck is a nice size and allows the sphincters to remain somewhat relaxed.

The base is designed like the top of a T rather than a disk. This is nice because it allows the toy to fit comfortably between your cheeks. This is particularly helpful if wearing the plug for an extended amount of time. The base itself is rather pliable, but it is large enough that I’ve never felt there was any danger of it slipping past the anus. The side of the base towards the neck has the nice radius on it. The other side, however, does not. I found this to be a bit of an annoyance during extended use and may have led to some minor chaffing on my cheeks.

Performance

The Ryder met my expectations from a performance standpoint. It is large enough that I know it's there, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. The somewhat compliant nature of the material helps with this. It stays in place during use. Aside from the minor chaffing on the cheeks from the lack of a radius on the backside of the base, it has been comfortable to wear for extended amounts of time.
    • Comfortable
    • Easy to use

Care and Maintenance

Care of the toy is quite simple. Being 100% silicone, you have the option of using toy cleaner, mild soap, 10% bleach solution, or (for the ultimate in sanitation) boiling. You may also run it through on the top rack of the dishwasher (no detergent) but this seems kind of inefficient for one toy. After air drying, I keep it sealed in a zip top plastic bag to keep it from accumulating lint and hair. This material is a lint magnet, so I also wash it off prior to use, just to make sure.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Packaging

The packaging is rather simple. The toy came in a clear plastic box with the toy in a clear plastic clamshell. There isn't a wealth of practical information contained on the package with regard to its use. For care instructions, they refer you to the Tantus website. In fact, the name "Ryder" only appears on UPC sticker on the back, leading me to believe that they use the same outer packaging and a unique inner clamshell for different products that they produce.

You could choose to store the toy in the package, but being thin plastic, I have doubts as to the long term durability of the packaging. Mine is already showing some wear and tear just from opening and closing it during the course of writing this review.
    • Minimal information
    • Not discreet

Experience

The Ryder is the first butt plug that I have tried. I purchased it based on the resounding good reviews that it received on EF. I was not disappointed in my choice. It has met all my expectation thus far. It's the right size and the compliance of the material makes it comfortable to wear. I've had no problems with it staying in place during use, either solo or during intercourse. The only thing I could find to critize was the lack of a radius on the back side of the base. This corner does tend to rub on my butt cheeks during extended use, which results is some minor chaffing. I intend to fix this with the use of some sharp scissors and/or an exacto knife to break the corner. Other than that, it's a great product and I would recommend it to anyone in the market for a silicone plug.
Follow-up commentary
This is still my favorite silicone plug. Unfortunately, looking at the Tantus website, it appears that the lovely copper color has been discontinued. They have added some limited edition neon colors that hopefully EdenFantasys will offer. The one complaint that I had with the edge on the base was quickly fixed with an exacto knife and some directions from Dwtim.

  • Can we get more toys in Copper?
    • The Ryder in Copper is so pretty. I'd love to see more toys offered in this colour. :) Is that likely to happen at all? I haven't seen it on any other listing. Is this colour discontinued?

Yes, it sure has been discontinued. It was weird - Copper was a slow seller, and we got some feedback from retailers that it wasn't at all popular. Then when we discontinued last Spring it got snapped up pretty quickly. I only have closeouts left, but we're hoping that by discontinuing Copper we'll have more time in the production schedule to pursue other colors.
    • Glow in the dark? That's my favorite color! Maybe something black light reactive?

  • Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?
    • Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?
    • Some, not all silicone lube will 'stick' to silicone material. I have read that some premium silicone lubes will work with some premium silicone materials. You can try some on the base and see, when I last tried it kinda etched the silicone material. (does that make sense) It left a indentation were the lube was.

That's the basics, Some of the other members can give a more technical answer.
    • Some silicone lubes will bond to some silicones. This seems to be more of an issue the softer the silicone is, so toys like O2 and VixSkin will be more susceptible (makes sense, as the silicone has fewer crosslinks). Quality lubes seem to have less of a problem also, and it is likely that cheaper silicones might have more of a problem.

I have tested quality silicone lube on several quality silicone toys and did not notice a permanent problem, but (a) the toys developed "hives" that lasted for a few hours (was gone the next day) and (b) it's really hard to clean the silicone lube off of the toys, but it can be done. While this is purely subjective, but it seemed that the silicone lube wasn't as "lubey" on silicone toys. I don't use silicone lube on silicone toys anymore - it's just not worth the trouble.

  • Is this going to be in stock soon?
    • If you haven't noticed, I've been going over my wishlist (see the O2 discussion) and I've noticed that this plug that I've wanted forever isn't even in stock. Will it be restocked?
    • That's funny. Two of the toys that I want to purchase are out of stock as well. The Vixen Ryder and Johnny. Then I noticed that several Vixen products are out of stock at the moment. I wonder when all of these toys will be restocked.
