My first anal toy

This is an incredible toy, and totally worth the price! It's comfortable, and can be used during intercourse, masturbation, or even while going about your daily tasks. The Ryder increases stimulation and makes everything feel tighter, especially when worn during vaginal penetration. It even makes orgasms more intense! This toy will definitely be staying close to the top of our toybox!

Use

The Ryder (by Tantus) is a relatively simple, smooth, oblong butt plug composed of pure silicone. It's just absolutely beautiful to look at, and is great for wearing during intercourse, masturbation, foreplay, or even just while you're going about your daily tasks. It also works well to help the wearer warm up for anal sex, if desired. It could also be used for vaginal penetration, but if it's already been used anally, it should be sterilized before insertion into the vagina.

Because the Ryder has a flared base, it is a hands-free toy, so you can simply insert it (once you're prepared, of course) and then turn your attentions to other things. It has a flared base for safety, to prevent it from getting lost inside your butt. Despite the base being somewhat wide (and rectangular), it is wondrously flexible for comfort.

It would best serve users that are not quite new to the world of anal, but not veterans to anal play either. It's relatively small, so someone who has experienced some anal play (fingers, slim dildos, etc) wouldn't have much- if any- problem using this toy as long as they've properly lubricated and warmed up. It probably wouldn't be very good for absolute beginners, because there is no tapering on the tip for easy insertion, and it is a bit girthy.

Material / Texture

The Ryder is composed entirely of high quality silicone. The plug itself is completely smooth -no texture at all- except where the word "Tantus" has been carved into the flared base with some sort of sharp tool before the silicone fully set. The material has a shiny/glossy finish which allows the toy to become wondrously slick when lubricated.

Silicone is a great material for sex toys because it is completely non-porous and can be sterilized either by bleaching (with a 10% solution) or by boiling. But we'll get into that stuff later.
Silicone has minimal odor to it when brand new, and will not hold odors from use. I have noticed that immediately after it's been used and washed, it does have a bit of an odd smell, but that goes away once it's dry. The material is firm but flexible, and has a decent amount of give/squish to it. Some people have even joked that it could be used as a stress ball of sorts. Because of the flexibility, the base (which looks like the width would make it uncomfortable) actually squishes inward during wear, so it's surprisingly comfortable, even for extended wear. This product boasts safety features such as food-grade material, hypo-allergenic, latex free, non-porous, and phthalates free.

Despite how wonderfully safe silicone is, it also has its downsides. Silicone toys that don't have a velvety finish tend to gather hair and lint like it's their job. It's suggested that users wash (or at least rinse) toys before use, which will usually get rid of the fuzzy bits.

This product should only be paired with WATER based lubricants. Allowing it to come into contact with oil, silicone, or even silicone and water hybrid based lubes could potentially result in damage to the outer coating, which would make it less safe to use.

Design / Shape / Size

The wide, round tip is a little less sphincter-friendly than the traditional style of butt plugs that have the tapered tip, especially for those who are just learning the joys of putting things in their butt. This plug would actually be best for intermediate users, because it is a bit girthy and doesn't have that user-friendly tapered tip.

The design works wonderfully. As I said before, the shape of the plug is smooth and oblong, sortof like a stretched egg, and it has a narrower neck leading into a flared base. The goal of the narrow neck is to prevent the toy from accidentally popping out during use, and the flared base is to prevent the toy from slipping completely inside, which would make removal tricky. Similar to an egg, the tip of the bulb is slightly narrower than the bottom of the bulb.

The Ryder measures 4.25" (4 1/4) from tip to base with 3.75" (3 3/4) of insertable length. The bulb has a circumference of 4.75" (4 3/4), a diameter of 1.5" (1 1/2), and the neck has approximately 1" long and .75" (3/4) in diameter.

The base is rectangular with rounded corners. It measures 2.5" (2 1/2) long and just over 1" wide. It's wide enough that you will notice it while you're wearing it, but it won't be uncomfortable once you adapt to the new feeling. Because it has this sort of base, it could be used with a harness, but I'm not sure how pleasant the width difference from neck to bulb would be during thrusting. Overall, it's medium in size. It's too big for most beginners, and too small for most anal experts.

Performance

Because of the blunt tip, it takes a generous coating of lube and plenty of warming-up. After several minutes of digital teasing of the anus, it's easier to get started. During insertion, the widening bulb of the plug will cause stretching/pulling sensations, followed by a satisfying POP when you reach the neck of the plug.

The Ryder gives the wearer a nice full feeling without rigidity, and the flared base folds or compresses in order to comfortably rest between the wearer's butt cheeks. With the Ryder inserted, it makes everything feel a bit more tighter, and the added sensation/stimulation makes orgasms more intense.

One thing I have noticed about the performance is that if you try to remove the plug too soon after orgasm, all of your muscles are still tight and removal can actually be more painful than insertion.
Because it's a relatively short plug, there are no worries that you won't be able to fully insert it. Also, the squishability of the plug makes it even more comfortable to wear. The base is wide enough that it's unlikely (though, not impossible) for it to slip inside, but not so wide that it will interfere with vaginal penetration with a penis or toy while it's being worn.

I haven't worn it out in public yet, but I did look last time I was wearing it, and it was completely undetectable in a normal stance, and so would be completely unnoticeable under clothing. Also, the base doesn't interfere at all if you want to wear the Ryder during intercourse.

Care and Maintenance

Because this toy is composed of silicone, there are many different ways to clean and care for it. For simple cleaning, it can be washed with antibacterial soap or toy cleanser and warm water, run through the dishwasher on the top rack (without soap) or wiped with toy wipes.

If you want to fully sterilize it, you can boil it for 3 minutes or clean it in a 10% bleach solution. If you want to get rid of the bleach smell after using this method, you can simply wash it (yes, after sterilizing it) with a pleasantly scented antibacterial soap. The Ryder should be sterilized before and after sharing, unless you and the person you're sharing with are fluid bonded.

When not in use, the Ryder should be kept in some sort of lint-free pouch or bag to prevent it from coming into contact with other toys or gathering dust/hair/lint. I keep mine in a little satin drawstring pouch from another, less beloved toy. As I've stated in other reviews, I've never personally experienced it, but I've heard/read many horror stories about toys that were stored loose (in contact with other toys) and ended up melting.

I would just like to repeat that the Ryder (and all silicone toys, for that matter) should ONLY be used with water based lubricants. Silicone, oil, and hybrid lubes can potentially damage the coating and make the toy less safe to use.

Packaging

The packaging is rather minimal, and definitely not worth keeping unless (for some reason) you want to store your toy in it between uses.

Essentially, it comes in a clear plastic box/carton. Nothing fancy. On the front, the material and safety features of said material are listed, along with boasts of "The world's best soft toys for adults". On the back, there is some information about the company and how to care for your new product.

Once you open the top, you'll find a clam-style plastic casing within that simply opens to release your new Ryder. Like I said, pretty simple/minimal packaging... But on the bright side, it's completely recyclable!

Personal comments

(Note: After my partner read that I'd selected "Travel Friendly", he said "It CAN be good for travel, if put away properly... If you know what I mean!")

Experience

The Ryder caught my eye because of the simple, unobtrusive design. After clicking over to the product page, I immediately fell in love with the purple Ryder. The beautiful swirls, the opalescent shimmer, the enchantingly rich shade... I lusted after the Ryder, but with the holidays coming up, all of my money was going toward gifts for my loved ones.

On Christmas morning (my birthday), I opened a gift from my partner to find the beautiful Ryder within. Of course, I immediately opened the box and held my first anal toy, and all I could think was "I want this beautiful thing inside me." Sadly, things were too hectic for the next few days for us to give it a try, but I waited patiently, keeping it right next to me at my computer so I could caress it and admire the deep, shimmering shades of purple.

When we finally got a chance to use the Ryder for the first time, we went about it all wrong. I had partaken in anal sex before, but wasn't aware that the anus needed to be warmed-up first (silly me). So, we simply lubed it up and inserted it.

Ouch.

Even for someone who's somewhat experienced with anal, that was unpleasant. Also, we'd paired it up with a lubricant that gave overwhelming sensations, which just added to the discomfort. Despite all of this, I ended up having a wonderfully powerful orgasm from my partner using the Wild G on me while I wore the Ryder.
Afterward, I removed the toy and washed it, only to discover another problem. The lube we'd used had damaged the finish of the plug, making it tacky/gooey, and little balls of material formed when I rubbed it. I'd found the lube (Wet Synergy Cool Tingle) in the "water based" section of EF's lubes, and we'd checked the label again before using it. Sadly, in our excitement to use the Ryder, we'd only read the top of the label, where it said "Water-based", and didn't read further down where it said not to use it with silicone toys because it was a hybrid lube.

We ended up having to replace the Ryder after only one use due to the lube mix-up...
Luckily, by the time the replacement arrived, we'd learned a bit more about anal penetration and safety. Because of our lack of preparation, my anus had torn the first time we used the Ryder. With the replacement, we were much more careful about our choice of lube, and took the time to prepare before insertion. It was definitely a MUCH more pleasant experience.
Follow-up commentary
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this toy! The blunt tip can be a little difficult to handle, but the overall shape of this toy is wonderful and the color is gorgeous! The base is perfectly sized and flexible for a comfortable fit.
I absolutely love wearing this plug during vaginal intercourse, because it adds extra stimulation that really contributes to a better, more powerful orgasm. It's easy to clean, comfortable to wear, and easy to store.
Totally worth every penny!

Really nice review. You included so much detail. I'm sorry to hear that you tore after using it though. This plug has always appealed to me but I'm not up to a plug this size yet.

Oil based lubes should not have a problem as long as they do not contain any silicone. By the way, what was the lube that caused the issue? Thanks for the great review.
  • Contributor: (k)InkyIvy
@Tuesday- It really is a great plug. I just didn't prepare properly, which led to the injury. When you warm up, there's no issue.

@Jimbo Jones- Jeez, I can't believe I forgot to include the name of the lube! I'll go back and edit that now. But, to answer your question, it was Wet Synergy Cool Tingle. It came up under the "water based" category of lubes here on EF (they've fixed it now) but was actually a silicone water hybrid. Even the label says "water based", and only mentions that it can't be paired with silicone toys in the warnings.
