A Silken Finger

The Small Silk is a simple, but high quality dildo that should suit just about anyone looking for a very small dido for any purpose. It is pretty much the perfect toy for new or nervous practitioners of anal play, though, more experienced players may find it too small to be exciting.
Published: October 2, 2011
Pros:
100% silicone; perfectly smooth; nice for beginners or anyone wanting a very small toy.
Cons:
Probably too small for many people's taste.

extremely useful review
This tiny dildo might be the perfect toy to introduce the nervous novice to anal penetration. At only about half an inch wide and four inches long, the Small Silk is easily the least intimidating dildo I have ever encountered. For visual reference, it is about the length and width of a rather long and slender finger.

So, why not just use a finger instead of springing for a finger-sized dildo? Well, you certainly can. And, if that's your preferred method, you might not find that the Small Silk is all that useful to you. Of course, while there are many good things to be said about fingers, there are also a few nice features about the dildo version.

For one thing, the Silk is perfectly smooth with no lumps, bumps, seams or imperfections to distract or irritate sensitive tissue. Not something you can say about everyone's fingers (though gloves can help a lot on that count).

I also find that it requires fewer contortions for me to use this toy anally on myself than when I attempt to use my own fingers. Plus, the thick base which makes it safe for anal play also makes it harness compatible for strap-on action.

So, now that I've highlighted its highlights, how does the Small Silk actually preform? The short answer is--great! But, the long answer probably depends on exactly what you want to use it for.

Overall, there isn't a great deal of give to the silicone used to make the Silk dildos. The material is probably most comparable in feel to a firm rubber, but much smoother and slicker than you usually see in rubber. When I squeeze the shaft, it only gives a little bit under my fingers. The shaft is thin enough, though, that the toy can be easily bent in half. I find this flexibility nice when using the toy on a partner because it makes it harder to accidentally cause pain by thrusting too hard or at the wrong angle. The downside to the flexibility, however, is that the curve of the toy is not firm enough to stimulate my g-spot or my partner's prostate.

Ultimately, I find the small version of the Silk really boring as a vaginal dildo. It is just too slim and too flexible to do much for me. As I've already suggested, though, I find the this toy much more useful as a anal dildo. It's so slender and so smooth that, with a little bit of lube, I find it makes for an easy and painless insertion. And my ass at least, is very sensitive to even the little bit of stimulation that the smallest Silk dildo provides.

I asked my partner if he thought that the curve of the toy stimulated the prostate, and he said, "eh." It was a scintillating conversation, I tell you. Seriously, though, he feels the same why I do. By itself this dildo is probably not going to set off any fireworks. As an introduction or a warm-up, though, the Silk excels.

I am guessing that many people will mostly outgrow this tiny dildo fairly quickly. I know my partner and I did. But, it remains a nice toy to have around when someone wants an extra gentle warm up for larger items, or when one of us wants to feel just a little something in our ass.

The Nuts and Bolts:

Like all of Tantus' soft toys, the Silk line is made of 100% medical grade silicone. Thus, you can sanitize them by boiling (10 minutes), bleaching (10% solution) or a trip though the dishwasher (top rack, no soap). These methods should make it safe to share your toy with others or to swap between orifices without cross-contamination.

All silicone toys also have the potential to experience a nasty reaction with silicone-based lubricants. Not all silicone toys will react with all silicone lubricants, but, if they do react, the lube immediately bonds to the toy, creating a gummy mess that cannot be washed off. You can do a patch test on the base of the toy if you want to find out if your toy and lube are compatible. Or, you can simply stick to water- or oil-based lubes when using silicone toys since there are no compatibility issues with these materials.
Experience
I purchased all three of the Silk dildos (small, medium and large) several years ago when my partner and I first started getting interested in strap-on anal play. I had already introduced him to anal penetration with my fingers, and he was willing but nervous to try pegging.

After a few months we both started to feel much more confident and relaxed about anal play, and these days we often start with the medium version of this dildo. I also feel that the small is just too short for easy use with a harness. You "lose" length in dildos when you strap them on, and between that and not actually being able to feel then end of the dildo, I find that it is really rather difficult not to keep popping out of the orifice I am supposed to be penetrating.

I am still glad that we got the whole Silk set, though, since it made our early pegging experiences extremely painless, both mentally and physically.

You did a really wonderful job on your first review in my class, Margotlette! You covered everything I had been curious about when I pondered picking this dildo up. And I love your writing style. I can't wait to work on the next one!

    • Has anybody tried the silk with a Theo? I'm concerned about whether or not the base will fit in the "ring" on the harness.

  • Small silk as a beginner anal toy
    • Kval
Hello! I am looking for advice. I'm introducing my wife to anal, but she is a little uncomfortable and concerned about pain. Will Small silk be ok to start practicing anal, or should I go with smth smaller/bigger?

Hi Kval! I think Silk is a wonderful toy for an anal novice. I've used this toy on a couple of anal beginners...it's very good because it's small and very smooth. You should not look for something bigger, she can only move up to a larger toy once she learns to relax the muscles with a smaller one. Good luck!
    • You can always go smaller, with beads, etc. DON'T go bigger, especially if she's apprehensive about it! Start with a finger or two before you buy a toy. If she's not ok with that, then it is silly to waste your money.

And PLEASE remember, Lube is your friend. Use lots of it. When you think you have enough, use some more! Thicker stuff, like Maximus, is really good in these situations.
