Knock, Knock, Knocking on Pleasure's Door.

If you're looking for a good, high-quality butt plug that's super comfortable, you're in the right place. The Ryder may look a little different that most plugs out there, but it's very charming in its own right. It stays where you put it, and it can be worn for extended periods without becoming uncomfortable. The shape may not be suitable for some beginners, but if you're confident, you should be able to ride the Ryder.
Published: October 10, 2011
Pros:
Comfortable, stays put, can be sterilized, base sits between cheeks, non-tapered design.
Cons:
Blunt end may be hard to insert for some.

Use

The Ryder is a lovely silicone butt plug. It's fairly simple with its smooth texture and shape and is a little different than most other butt plugs you'll see out there. It's best when used anally during intercourse, masturbation, foreplay, or whenever you get that urge to wear a plug! The Ryder can also be a warm-up for anal sex and can be used to practice with until you get comfortable enough to actually engage in anal sex, as the size and shape are a good preparation for a penis or dildo in a realistic shape.

Because of the shape of the Ryder, it doesn't come slipping out very easily during play. Tantus designed this one to stay in, and they did an excellent job with that. The stay-put shape doesn't make it ideal for thrusting, though. The flat, straight base of it make it comfortable for wearing for an extended period of time unlike plugs with the larger, round bases. Fear not, though. The base is very secure and totally anal-safe.

This butt plug would be great for those who already have some experience with anal play. The size and the shape may be difficult for beginners since the top is not tapered at all. This plug could be used vaginally, if you wish. Just make sure you sanitize it after using anally.

Material / Texture

Silicone is a lovely material for anal toys. It's the only non-porous material that is flexible. You can sterilize it by boiling it or washing it with a 10% bleach solution, which is a good feature to have in things you stick up your butt. Silicone is also notorious for being pretty much odorless. This toy is no different. It may have a very slight (and pleasant, at least to me) silicone smell, but it's usually gone when they toy airs out for a small amount of time.

The Ryder is firm, but still pretty squishy. It can be easily inserted, and it stays incredibly comfortable without being too rigid. Because the silicone is non-porous, it becomes super slick when lube is applied, and the whole plug becomes wonderfully slick for smooth insertion. The base is very flexible and will comfortably keep your plug in place.

The only downside of most silicone toys is that they are lint magnets, and this one is no departure from that. It will pick up lint, fuzz, and dust. It's easily washed off with a damp cloth or by running it under some water, but the material is slightly tacky. Make sure you give this one a good rinse before inserting it so you don't end up with fuzz-butt.

Design / Shape / Size

Ryder is a great size for intermediate anal players. It's 4 1/4" long, 3 3/4" in insertable length, and 1 1/2" in diameter. It's not the largest sized plug out there, but it's not the smallest. It seems to run in the middle range of average plugs. Anyone who can handle anal sex should be able to use this plug with ease, and those who are just about at that level can use this as a great practice or warm-up tool. So, as long as you're not a beginner, you should be able to ride the Ryder.

The shape is a little different from most plugs out there, as well. Most plugs have a tapered end at the top, while the Ryder is much more blunt and rounded. Others are also graduated in size where the bottom is much larger that the top. Ryder, on the other hand, is straighter. This seems to make the plug a lot more comfortable and natural feeling than most others out there. This shape also helps it to stay in and not slip out while moving or during sex.

Of course the Ryder isn't to discreet. If you plan to travel with it, it would be a good idea to wrap it in a plastic bag, and place that bag in another small pouch. (You don't want lint sticking to it.)

Performance

My partner who is incredibly new to anal play was able to take this plug no problem and is totally in love with it. The first time he used it, it slid in wonderfully and he was overwhelmed by how stimulating he found it to be on his p-spot. Afterwards, he was slightly in awe over how well it worked. (I was more in awe that he could get it in like that with no problem. He took it like a pro!)

Insertion of the Ryder takes a little patience because of the rounded design, but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy. The best tip is to make sure you're relaxed, and then it's easy going from there and the plug will slip right in. Another plus of the short design of this plug is that it can go right in without having to worry about hitting any internal walls that may stop it from going completely in. The small neck of it keeps it in really well, and it is easy to remove once you're done with play.

The silicone makes this plug incredibly comfortable. You can squeeze your anal muscles around it and it will massage the inside of your rectum comfortably and fully unlike the tapered designs. The base is great because it fits right between your cheeks and can be worn undetected under clothing. Ladies can wear this during intercourse without it being too hard or bulky for comfortable vaginal penetration.

Even though the base is soft and straight instead of round, it can be used in a harness without it slipping out too easily. It's not the best butt plug for a harness, but it does work.

Care and Maintenance

Silicone is super easy to care for. You can wash this with antibacterial soap and water, toy wash or wipes, or wash it down with a 10% bleach solution for sanitizing. Silicone can also be boiled for the same reason. Because you can sterilize your silicone, this toy can be shared with others without having to worry about anyone else's germs lingering on it.

Keep this plug in an area that's free of dust or lint so it's clean the next time you go to use it. Small plastic bags are wonderful for this. The material has a habit of getting fuzzy if left out or placed in a cloth bag.

As with all silicone, make sure you only use water-based lubed. Silicone lubes can damage the material and leave your plug looking icky with no way to fix it.

Experience

I originally bought this plug for myself because I wanted to warm myself back up to being able to handle anal sex. I was a little intimidated by it when I first saw it because it was a little bigger than I had anticipated. I'd been able to handle toys of a similar size, but this one just wasn't going anywhere when I tried to insert it. I got super frustrated with it. I decided to bring it to my partner and let him see if it worked for him. He'd only used things anally a few times and nothing this size. I handed the plug over to him during play one night. He lubed it up and popped it in like it was nothing. I was shocked! I had such a hard time with it and he took it like a champ and loved the hell out of it. This has become his favorite toy ever and he's talking me in to getting him some new toys because he loves this one so much. It didn't really work for me, but it was fantastic for him. I think I just need to start smaller and not try to use this as my first plug.
Follow-up commentary
Because I wasn't able to have much luck with this, I let my lover keep it and he loves to to absolute death. It was his first ever anal toy and now he's been begging me to get him more. The toy has held up to several uses and is in perfect condition!

@Tim: You're so silly. Gotta hate that fuzz butt. Yucky!

@Stormy: I'm so much of a toy snob that I refuse to put anything in my but that's porous. It's just so . . . ick!

Awesome review! I have wanted this toy for awhile. I have to get rid of this mystery material mid size plug I have and want something safe to replace it with. The shape seemed hard to insert, but your review is making me want to move it to the top of my wishlist.

  • Can we get more toys in Copper?
    • The Ryder in Copper is so pretty. I'd love to see more toys offered in this colour. :) Is that likely to happen at all? I haven't seen it on any other listing. Is this colour discontinued?

Yes, it sure has been discontinued. It was weird - Copper was a slow seller, and we got some feedback from retailers that it wasn't at all popular. Then when we discontinued last Spring it got snapped up pretty quickly. I only have closeouts left, but we're hoping that by discontinuing Copper we'll have more time in the production schedule to pursue other colors.
    • Glow in the dark? That's my favorite color! Maybe something black light reactive?

  • Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?
    • Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?
    • Some, not all silicone lube will 'stick' to silicone material. I have read that some premium silicone lubes will work with some premium silicone materials. You can try some on the base and see, when I last tried it kinda etched the silicone material. (does that make sense) It left a indentation were the lube was.

That's the basics, Some of the other members can give a more technical answer.
    • Some silicone lubes will bond to some silicones. This seems to be more of an issue the softer the silicone is, so toys like O2 and VixSkin will be more susceptible (makes sense, as the silicone has fewer crosslinks). Quality lubes seem to have less of a problem also, and it is likely that cheaper silicones might have more of a problem.

I have tested quality silicone lube on several quality silicone toys and did not notice a permanent problem, but (a) the toys developed "hives" that lasted for a few hours (was gone the next day) and (b) it's really hard to clean the silicone lube off of the toys, but it can be done. While this is purely subjective, but it seemed that the silicone lube wasn't as "lubey" on silicone toys. I don't use silicone lube on silicone toys anymore - it's just not worth the trouble.

  • Is this going to be in stock soon?
    • If you haven't noticed, I've been going over my wishlist (see the O2 discussion) and I've noticed that this plug that I've wanted forever isn't even in stock. Will it be restocked?
    • That's funny. Two of the toys that I want to purchase are out of stock as well. The Vixen Ryder and Johnny. Then I noticed that several Vixen products are out of stock at the moment. I wonder when all of these toys will be restocked.
