Cruel to be kind: the Wartenberg pinwheel
BDSM is all about the balance of pain and pleasure, and the pleasure that comes from pain. The Wartenberg pinwheel is an invaluable tool in this regard, as it provides both pain and pleasure to the person on whom it is being used. Combine that with the fact that it is so inexpensive, and it's hard to believe that there could be a better addition to your BDSM arsenal.Published: January 24, 2011
Pros:
Cheap for what it provides, Sturdy construction, Produces an array of sensations depending on use
Cons:
Can potentially leave some temporary marks on the skin
Looking like a miniature, toothed pizza cutter, the Wartenberg pinwheel doesn't immediately look like it would be a sex toy. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. The sturdy, chrome-plated device can provide an array of sensations ranging from almost ticklish to sharp pain. If you aren't into exploring BDSM, the Wartenberg pinwheel is probably not for you, but if light BDSM excites you and/or your partner, it is an ideal addition to any BDSM beginner's arsenal. This tool is also ideal for medical play. After all, this is a real medical instrument, used to test areas of skin for sensitivity in patients experiencing localized neural issues.
Using it is pretty straightforward; you grab the handle and drag the wheel across the skin of your partner. The less the pressure, the more it feels like a prickly, ticklish sensation. The greater the pressure, the more pain that is produced. Too much pressure can even draw blood, but one would have to be trying to do so for it to occur. Varying your pressure is important, not just to tease and torment your partner, but because certain areas of the body are naturally more sensitive than others. It can also be used like a mallet, inasmuch as it can be stuck on the skin to provide more focused pain.
I use it fairly frequently on my wife, and do it in coordination with other sensory play. Specifically, I place a blindfold over her eyes and ear plugs and industrial-grade ear muffs over her ears, thus denying her two of the five senses. As the axiom goes, when the body is deprived of one sense, the others make up for it, so when the body is deprived of two senses, it's easy to imagine how hypersensitive the other senses become. It is under these conditions where the Wartenberg pinwheel becomes devilish fun. Nothing gets my wife's endorphins rushing more than dragging it across her labia and clitoris. The combination of pain and pleasure it generates in these areas produces a sensation that my wife says is unparalleled.
I have literally used it on every part of my wife's body except her eyes, and the only place where it leaves a mark is between the navel and the area between the breasts. The red line of dots the pinwheel produces in this area do disappear pretty quickly, and I've yet to notice them the following day.
Cleaning could be a bit tricky considering what might get soiled is the prickly wheel, but we are able to wash it in the dishwasher with no problem.

Writing my review made me wonder -- has anyone had rust issues with the pinwheel sold here?
-
Interesting question. Since it's chrome plaited steel, I would assume it could possibly rust because chrome does oxidize over time.

Quote: Writing my review made me wonder -- has anyone had rust issues with the pinwheel sold here? Can't say that I have had rust issues - it's made of chrome-plated brass from what I've observed. My #1 problem with my wheels (regardless of source) is that you're pretty much on your own to find a suitable sheath - they will poke through many materials, and I've had at least one that poked through something and bent the tines.
That one does not get used in play.

Wartenberg Pinwheel: Any On The Way?
-
I'm literally aching to snag one of the Wartenberg Pinwheels link but they're sold out and I'd like to know when they'll be back, or maybe if theres one stray floating about the inventory from the move... I don't like the Fetish Fantasies one, it looks so cheap and less intense (a bad thing for me).
Does any of the warehouse people know if there's anymore of these buggers lying around? I just want 1! :( -
I'll let the product manager know about this. Thanks for asking.

Hello ShadowKitten! The pinwheels are currently on order and we are hoping to have them available by the end of the week, so just hold on and they will be in soon.

I'm curious to see if anyone's tried using a sewing tracing wheel as a less-intense alternative, or first step to using a Wartenberg pinwheel?
-
why would you want a less intense toy. The wheel is not all that bad.
-
The Wartenberg pinwheel is only as intense as you want it to be. If you lightly trace it over the skin, it isn't at all prickly, but the harder you press, the more intense it becomes.

Finally! The Pinwheel!
-
I was uber excited to see that the Wartenberg pinwheel will soon become available at Eden, but does nayone have any more info about it? Will toys from the Stockroom soon be available here? This totally makes my day!
Thanks :D -
I was definitely excited too, cannot wait to get it!
-
I'm super excited too and can't wait to buy one. Finally all of us squeaky wheels got our wish ;)
I think we're only carrying like one or two things from Stockroom.
I asked Maxim, our Product Manager, to hop in here and let us know when these will be in stock and all that jazz.

Thank you for viewing Wartenberg pinwheel – bondage toy review page!

I too own this. I have not had the pleasure of using it on my husband, but I do so look forward to it. Nice review. Glad you like it.
I'm going to have to get this one of these days . . . Never thought about using it on the clit though! I'm a bit intimidated by that prospect, LOL!
Great review!
Hmmm... we may have to try this one.
